‘Glee and Me’ at @rxtheatre . A captivating performance from Liv Hill, accompanied by excellent production.
Stunning lighting design by Jess Bernberg, wonderfully natural dialogue reproduction as always from the Royal Exchange, and some really interesting sound design by George Dennis, making excellent use of the spatial capabilities of the system as well as routing to smaller ‘diegetic’ speakers on stage to create transitions from non-diegetic sound to localised diegetic sound.
It was so good that I saw it twice. If you haven’t been to the Royal Exchange before or haven’t been recently, book yourself a ticket for something, I’ve never been disappointed by anything I’ve seen there and small theatres like this need our help more than ever right now.

I’ve had my lighting engineer hat on recently, installing a new lighting rig in a local dance studio and lighting up some pre recorded dance shows whilst we wait for live performance to start again. This old fat frog is getting on a bit but is still remarkably capable.

This was my first time using an F6 and my first impressions are mixed. The capabilities are impressive, 32bit it great but the ergonomics and the UI are pretty terrible

I spent some time at @scienceandindustrymuseum the other day between lectures and noticed they had made use of some quite interesting sound technology. As part of one of their temporary exhibitions they had used HSS ultrasonic speakers to create ‘pockets’ of focussed sound. This meant that the sound was only audible in very small bubbles which you passed in and out of as you walked through the exhibit.
They had also used a parabolic speaker. This works like a parabolic microphone in reverse, instead of focusing outside sound to one point, it focusses the sound coming from its own speaker on one point below it. This was hung above a video exhibit to reduce audio bleed to the rest of the space whilst making it clearly audible to anyone watching the video.
As someone who is consistently disappointed with the implementation of audio at museums and galleries, it’s really exciting to see a museum start to use these technologies to improve their exhibits.
