Island of Refuge is an ongoing long form documentary project and body of work, which I started in 2015.
Excited to screen the short film version at @90mil___ tonight.
This is the trailer for Island of Refuge, a documentary project about the refugee crisis on Lesvos, Greece. Island of Refuge is about the magical island and how it has changed people’s lives within the backdrop of the crisis. The main characters featured in the film have decided to call Lesvos their home.
I lived on the island for over a year and have made multiple trips to Lesvos and Greece to continue the work and documentation.

Almost 20 years ago I made “Ayse”, my graduation film about a little girl trapped under the rubble after the 1999 earthquake in Turkey. It’s based on the true story of a young girl who lay next to her dead grandmother for 12 hours before rescuers were able to save her. When I woke up to the news that an earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter scale had hit again I knew the death toll would be over 20,000. The situation in Turkey and Syria is beyond horrifying. I’m watching the news and seeing the same rescue services AKUT doing the work we re-enacted for our film in 2004. If you have the capacity to donate to the agencies that are out there trying help people, please do.

This is the story of Halima and her inspirational work and perseverance.
I had the privilege of shooting and directing Halima’s story in Azilal, Morocco. I always intended this film to be a calm and reflective insight into someone else’s world, choosing to let the events unfold rather than forcing or constructing the narrative the way documentary sometimes can do. I didn’t use voice over because I also feel like it could take away from the meditative quality of simply observing.
A special thank you to Halima and all the women who made us feel so welcome in their magical country.

MY CLITORIS! A cheeky but very meaningful music video I directed, working with the young people of Integrate UK - making it very clear that no form of FGM is acceptable.
The video challenges some people’s assertions that type 1 or type 4 FGM is ‘mild’ or not serious.
