When I don’t feel good
I don’t go outside
I can’t lie or make excuses
I’m toxic when I try
they say what you focus on expands
so every time you smile, you nod,
or shake hands
you’re spreading something good
something true
like calling your mother
out of the blue
these strangers all over
are versions of me
so if I please them
don’t they please me?

that’s the way to do it
make them smile, fill them with glee
No
I won’t listen
I can’t weaponize my kindness
you can’t touch it
it’s free
don’t be a coward
don’t be a phony
and don’t be a fake
but ask yourself
how can I actually relate?
happiness is real
but only when it’s shared
these lonely, lonely years
made me colder and unprepared
you’ll find your way back
back to the center
you’re still you my friend
don’t you remember?
