Frontal Lobe (@oldmanbasel) will be hosting an in-studio performance and interview from avant-garde experimental ensemble Insect Life on Sunday, October 26th at 2pm.Born from weekly collaborative sessions at clarinettist Ben Goldberg’s house, Insect Life is an Oakland-based experimental ensemble dedicated to pushing the boundaries of improvised music. The band emphasizes spontaneity, orchestral cohesion, and an adventurous sonic palette that fuses avant-garde and abstract elements. Insect Life is set to release their self-titled debut album via @577records on November 7th, 2025. Enhancing the record’s depth, @zacharyjameswatkins (Black Spirituals, Foreign/Domestic, and KALX Live! alum) contributes remixes as a guest member for this album, complementing the ensemble’s expansive sonic landscape.This performance will feature Ben Goldberg (@ben_goldberg_bag) on clarinet, Raffi Garabedian (@raffigarabedianmusic) on tenor saxophone, Danny Lubin-Laden (@dannylubin) on trombone, Myra Melford (@myramelford) on keys, Ben Davis on cello, and Hamir Atwal (@atwalhamir) on the drums.

LA-based interdisciplinary artist and experimental mycologist Sam Shoemaker (@samkshoemaker) did just that, successfully paddling over 26 miles across the Catalina Channel on a boat grown from mycelium earlier this August. Head to the @rockawayfilmfest for a screening of two of Paul's films, Hypnosis Display (a commissioned collaboration with @grouperepuorg) and some rare footage (last shown 2017 at @zebulonla) with a live sound performance by sweet @jcantuledesma. Happening this Sunday night 8/24. Make sure to check out the rest of the festival, too.It's been very special and emotional to support my mom Lena @she_swims_ in preparing these films. We're excited to keep working to keep his films in circulation!
