Art as Act of Communion with Nature
Olana Light @olanalight is a multidisciplinary artist. Through photography and performance art, she interrogates the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
In this Interview, Light shares with our Culture Editor @leila.elzabri how her creative process is inspired by her closeness with nature. She creates wearable sculptures using tree bark, soft moss or blades of grass, winding through themes of identity and femininity, and prodding the boundaries between human and nature
Her performances make space for introspection and reflection, revealing both a personal desire and a will to emphasise the need for communing with nature.
Read the full interview via the link in our bio and subscribe to our newsletter for more stories that bridge the gap between human and nature for personal and planetary well-being.

I’m very happy to share that my exhibition Searching for a Place to Belong @searchingforaplacetobelong is currently part of the Arbola Festival in Pamplona.
Through photography, performance, and wearable sculptures created from natural materials, my work explores transformation, belonging, and the deep connection between women and nature.
This project reflects on how the landscape can become an extension of ourselves - a place of memory, healing, and coexistence.

Did you get the chance to hug a birch tree at Beltain at Butser Farm?
During my performance, something quietly beautiful unfolded - people didn’t just observe, they connected. One by one, they stepped closer, wrapping their arms around the birch tree wearable sculpture… as if greeting an old friend.
There’s something ancient and softly powerful about birch - a symbol of renewal, gentleness, and new beginnings.
I’m so grateful to have been part of this year’s Beltain. Thank you, @butserancientfarm , for the invitation and the space to share this moment.
Would you hug a tree if it hugged you back?
