Extracts from my mfa project titled good girls go to heaven, bad girls go wondering. The project is in dialogue with Indonesian artist @ranuritamalan and their written works. The project explores alternative temporalities which exist outside of the heteronormative that is constructed on the basis of reproduction, marriage, longevity, inheritance, etc. When one wanders off of these linear timelines we question what objects, people, and places are left behind and what comes into frame. Special thanks to @fotocolectania for the opportunity to show the work at their annual event. And thank you to @mikidemolina & @salvaelefante for your guidance. Also, shout out to @patrivia4.0 for their rad lyrics from their song ‘Terampas’ which is referenced in slide 3! 🖤

Last April, I had the privilege of spending the day with Mr. Troy Delone who is a case manager at @thefirst72plus ; representing former incarcerated individuals with the best reentry process they can get. I think the most important conversation we had was about breaking generational curses that not only his family had carried with them for so long but also his community. He took me around the neighborhood he grew up in and shared some stories of the curses he was talking about. He said that he always wanted to be present in his kids lives unlike the men in his family before him. And you can see just how much of an impact being in his kid’s lives has had. The way his daughter looks back to see if he’s still there as he r dad drops her off at school, the way she shows him her new favorite artwork she drew that day, or how his son has the exact same stance as him as they tend to the yard while his daughter rides her bike in the background. It was such a privilege to be able to capture these moments of Troy’s family.

It’s been about 2 years since I’ve been back in Guatemala for Semana Santa. It’s such a unique holiday that takes place the week leading up to Easter and commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. Cucuruchos (bearers) can be seen carrying Altas which are floats that tell the story of Jesus’ crucifixion, these floats can weigh several tons and are typically carried by 20-50 bearers. The floats are carried from cathedral to cathedral with the path covered by alfombras; carpets made out of sawdust, chalk, plants, fruits, and vegetables in order to bless that path before being walked over by the procession and destroyed.

I had the pleasure of spending the day with @unicefguatemala where the team tested drone prototypes designed to enhance disaster relief efforts. Here in Guatemala, especially during the rainy season communities are susceptible to mudslides, these drones will be used to scan the affected areas to assess topography, identify accessibility issues to ground transportation, and provide real-time data to determine efficient resource allocation and immediate response. Partnering with local authorities, UNICEF aims to leverage drone technology to improve emergency preparedness and deliver life-saving supplies to hard-to-reach areas. This initiative is part of UNICEF’s broader program to explore drone applications, including vaccine delivery, improved connectivity, and aerial imaging, to overcome geographic challenges and advance rights of children in vulnerable communities.
