With the installation of our newest commemorative panel honoring Assistant Chief Emada Tingirides, we weren’t just reflecting on history — we’ve been able to experience it firsthand.
A trailblazer in leadership, mentorship, and service, Assistant Chief Tingirides’ impact continues to shape the culture and future of this Department every single day.
The Oscar Joel Bryant Foundation Board is proud to once again recognize her commitment to excellence and the example she sets for generations of officers to come.

Emada Tingirides made history as the first Black woman to serve as Assistant Chief in the Los Angeles Police Department—breaking barriers in one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the world. Her career represents more than promotion through the ranks; it reflects decades of leadership, community partnership, and a commitment to transforming policing through trust and service.
Rising from patrol to executive leadership, Assistant Chief Tingirides became nationally recognized for her work in community-based policing, proving that leadership is not just about command—it’s about connection. Her legacy stands as a reminder that representation matters, excellence has no ceiling, and history is still being written by those willing to lead from the front.

During National Police Week in Washington, D.C., an OJB member took a moment to honor Oscar Joel Bryant at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
Among thousands of names etched into stone are men and women who answered the call knowing the risks that came with the badge. Oscar Joel Bryant’s legacy continues to live far beyond his End of Watch.
This picture is more than a memorial.
It’s a reminder that sacrifice echoes through generations.

During National Police Week, while our nation gathers in Washington D.C. to honor the fallen, we also took time here at home to remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Oscar Joel Bryant — a man whose ultimate sacrifice has impacted generations and continues to inspire service, leadership, and unity today.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support, share memories, and stand together in remembrance. The OJB Foundation will continue to honor his legacy through service, mentorship, leadership, and community. His name and impact will never be forgotten. 🕊️🤝

58 years ago today, a young Marine veteran and LAPD Policeman named Oscar Bryant went to work. It would be his last shift. 🕊️
Early that afternoon, working a one-man unit, a citizen alerted Oscar to an armed robbery in progress at a dress shop on 67th St and Western. Without hesitation, he moved toward the danger to protect innocent lives, calling for backup as he went.
Single-handedly, Oscar confronted the four suspects and held them at gunpoint. As he looked away to request a local business owner to call in additional units, one of the armed men drew a concealed revolver. The suspect opened fire, mortally wounding Oscar.
Even as he fell, Oscar displayed legendary courage. He emptied his service weapon, wounding the gunman and another suspect, halting their escape until responding units flooded the scene. A total of 10 individuals were arrested and later convicted for their roles in the crime.
Oscar was a hero. He was also the third Black officer killed in the line of duty in LAPD history. This ultimate sacrifice inspired his fellow officers to establish the Oscar Joel Bryant Foundation later that year to fight discrimination and mentor African American officers.
To this day, his sacrifice is never forgotten. Every year on May 13th, during National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week, those who knew him, served with him, and carry on his legacy gather at his gravesite in the Hollywood Hills to Honor his Sacrifice.
Today, we honor Policeman Bryant and the more than 23,000 law enforcement officers nationwide who have laid down their lives in service to their communities since 1776.
Rest in peace, Policeman Bryant. We have the watch from here. 💙🖤
📍 If you are in the area, please join the memorial gathering today at 11:00 AM at his gravesite in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
