CDT: Mystery and The Great Beyond I have been asked many times “how does one train for a long thru hike?” Of course the simple answer is to just start hiking, but those who have dared to attempt a thru hike have an understanding that it is so much more than that. There are places on the CDT, in all it’s dramatic ever changing landscapes, that will try one’s resolve to the very core of their being. Whether it’s the heat of New Mexico, the chill of the high mountains of Colorado, or dry exposure of the Great Basin in Wyoming, there will be tests every step and every mile of one’s journey. It is these tests that are part of the mystery of the natural unknown and the gateway to the great beyond of one’s self. These were driving forces on my hike, mystery and the great beyond. I had wanted to quit so many times but I knew because I could still walk and carry my pack, I had to keep moving, if only to see what mystery was over the next mountain, or have just one more peek inside of myself to see if there was some where deeper to explore. For those who followed me on this adventure, you know I’ve written much about my time out here. I hope somehow I’ve continued to inspire you and that my words and photos have conveyed some understanding of how truly awesome and arduous these long hikes can be. Maybe somehow through my expressions, you’ve felt what I have felt and maybe one day you will venture out and discover your own mysteries and what lies inside the great beyond of yourself…just start hiking. Day one at the southern terminus vs day 135 at the northern terminus. On my hardest days on the trail, I could always remind myself that I was on my way to create this photo. I just had to walk there to make it worth it. I wanted this photo to speak for itself. I wanted it to express what I was hoping this adventure could do for me. // HIKING SEASON IS OVER \\ I apologize to Dr. Thompson for borrowing from the title of his swan song, but it seemed a fitting one considering my end of the triple crown journey, and to thru hiking in general. Finishing the AT, for me, was the end of a chapter. It had to be. No more maps, no more resupplies, no more big mile days. I found what I was looking for out there on these long scenic trails of my America and I feel a whole part of me is complete. I ain’t no “do nothin Larry” anymore. With this completion comes the death of the hiker I was on these trails. My name was Bird, and it was an alias I loved and lived in for awhile. I don’t know how other hikers saw me, but I know at least as Bird I embraced this hiker trash life. Bird slept on the ground most nights in a tent, ate many large pizzas and drank a lot of cokes. Bird hiked over big mountains and through the rain and mud and into the late evening desert sun. Bird suffered hard days just to see the beauty in the backcountry. Bird was a thru hiker, who became a triple crown hiker. Now, as this chapter closes, Bird will become a memory. I don’t have an interest anymore to hike long distances. I wanted to test my endurance, and these long days on the trail did just that and I held strong through them. I have these full memories of beautifully challenging days climbing over mountains, and when I recall those days, time expands on itself in the memory as if I am reliving it all over again. This chapter closes as I find my way back home from Maine. I will miss this life of trampoosing along the great scenic trails in my country but there are other horizons to explore now, and I want to do that with my partner @kiddsee . I’ll return home, settle in, and sometime soon some new adventure will call out to me, but for now hiking season is over.
