To mark what would have been Tish Murtha’s 70th birthday, @tishmurtha and @britishculturearchive are proud to announce Vandalism on a Grand Scale, presenting Tish’s seminal Youth Unemployment series in a bold new form.
I was honoured to be asked to contribute an essay to the new publication. When Tish died in March 2013, her photography was relatively unknown. It’s incredible to reflect on how awareness of her art has grown since then, thanks to the careful work of her daughter Ella at the Tish Murtha Archive.
I chose to write about Tish’s legacy: what drove her as an artist and a human, the power and meaning behind her work, and what we can learn from her today.
I am grateful to my dear friend, the indomitable Ella Murtha, for trusting me not once but twice (!) with her mother’s legacy. And deep thanks to Paul at the British Culture Archive for being a constant champion and supporter of Tish’s work and a custodian of British documentary photography.
Pre-orders are available now through through @britishculturearchive . The first 1000 orders will receive an exclusive fine art card featuring the book cover.

‘She wanted to use her pictures as evidence to make people’s lives better’
📷 Photographer Tish Murtha took pictures of some of the most deprived parts of England in the 70s.
She studied at the School of Documentary Photography at The University of Wales, Newport, and her work has been displayed at the Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery.
However, she wasn’t recognised during her lifetime. Now her daughter Ella and producer Jen Corcoran have come together to make a film about her life and work 📽️
They joined @itsanitarani to talk about why making the film was so important, and how Tish first discovered photography.
You can hear the full discussion on @bbcsounds – it’s the Woman’s Hour episode for 17 November 📻

Swipe right to step into the wonderful world of Jen Corcoran, as we catch up with her on her ‘5 Things’ of the moment.
Jen is a creative producer from northeast England, heading up Teesside-based Freya Films, which has a focus on female-led storytelling and new narratives from underrepresented communities.
It was through Freya Films that Jen produced the hugely successful film TISH ( @tishmurthafilm ) a film about social documentary photographer Tish Murtha, of which we had the absolute pleasure of running the PR and partnerships campaign for.
TISH is now available to watch at home or online in the UK & Ireland via Curzon Home Cinema. See link in bio or go to: homecinema.curzon.com/film/tish/
