In the April/May 2026 issue of Ohio Schools, you’ll meet Westerville science teacher David Grimes, a leader in his local union and community who is now serving as mayor of Westerville. Grimes shares his accomplishments in city government and hopes as mayor, and thoughts on the importance of having educators in public office, including Westerville colleague and fellow WEA leader Kelley Stocker, Westerville’s Vice Mayor. You’ll learn why Ohio Representative Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) — a veteran teacher and Lifetime OEA member — believes our union matters more than ever; how eliminating property taxes would equal total devastation for Ohio communities; and how OEA members are helping to fight food insecurity through Fill the Bus drives. You’ll also read about a new initiative — Strong Unions Make Strong Public Schools — to promote the value of local unions; what’s next in the fight to stop vouchers in Ohio; and learn about the Pre-Retirement Pathway: Purpose, Planning, and Possibility. The April/May issue also includes information on statewide candidates for the OEA 2026 Spring RA; tips for surviving the pressure to always be on; and a look at the 2026 Advocacy and Organizing Institute. Look for your copy of Ohio Schools in the mail, and visit OEA’s website where you’ll find this issue 👇 /publications/april-may-2026-ohio-schools/ #publiceducationmatters #ohioschools #strongunionsmakestrongschools @ohneweducators @oeaaspiringed

Now, 27 years later, he's the Ohio Teacher of the Year. In that role, he has spent the 2025-2026 school year traveling around the state and the country, representing Ohio's public school educators, lifting up the positive stories about the power of our public schools, and sharing his message about the importance of staying the course. He joins us for this episode to catch us up on some of the many things he has done and lessons he has learned during his Ohio Teacher of the Year term so far. Every Ohio community relies on property taxes including individuals with disabilities and at-risk children. Elimination would mean: 😔 Nearly 117,000 Ohioans with developmental disabilities rely on county board services funded 75–85% by property taxes. 😔 13,000 at-risk children depend on child protective services that are funded 95% by voter-approved property tax levies. #publiceducationmatters #protectohioschools #declinetosign

The Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) is aware of threats of violence that were made to Ohio schools in the last week. The OSSC is actively working with the Statewide Terrorism Analysis and Crime Center and FBI as well as schools and local law enforcement to support their efforts to investigate these threats. While these threats recently did not appear to be credible, the OSSC takes all threats to schools seriously and recommends that schools and first responders do the same. Even if your school has not experienced a threat recently, this is a good time to refresh staff on your policies and procedures for threats in case this continues. Proactively reach out to law enforcement to better understand how they will investigate and clear the buildings and your protocols for response or even closing schools, if necessary. For more information related to swatting and how to handle these type of threats, the OSSC has created an informational bulletin that can be shared with all school staff. Threats can be shared in different formats, to anyone in a school. It is important to educate all staff and ensure they know how to report this information. https://ohioschoolsafetycenter.ohio.gov @ohioschoolsafetycenter #ohioschools #treats #onlinethreats #OSSC #schools #educators #teachers #policiesandprocedures #lockdownprotocol
