Just finished Born on a Tuesday by Elnathan John, and...my!!!
This book follows the life of Ahmad Dantala, a young boy navigating survival, influence, and identity in Bayan Layi, and it really felt like reading something deeply real rather than fictional.
What stood out to me the most was how raw the storytelling is. It doesn’t romanticize anything, it shows how environment, choices, and exposure can shape a person over time.
It was heartbreaking at points, especially thinking about how easily young people can be influenced by the world around them without fully understanding the consequences of their actions.
Then I met Aisha. Another character that really stuck with me, confident, and layered, in a way that made her feel very human rather than one-dimensional.
What I appreciated most was how the book exposed deeper societal and religious realities without forcing an opinion on the reader. It simply lets you observe and reflect.
By the end, I was left thinking about identity, influence, and how much of who we become is shaped by where we come from.
