Giulio Fontana returns to Psoma with his third release, the functionally named "Noise Fantasia" - a nine-track album with a modest twenty-eight minute runtime that (as is Fontana's usual at this point) feels deeper and wider than the runtime may otherwise indicate.
"Noise Fantasia" differs slightly from his previous two Psoma releases ("Omega" and "Filterbank Feedback Works") in the tools utilized, where "Omega" consisted of no-input Mackie 1202-VLZ mixer feedback, and "Filterbank" consisted of (you guessed it) a no-input configuration on the Sherman Filterbank 2, "Noise Fantasia" consists of live experimentations on the JMT SNB-3 (a so-called 'noise synthesizer' that uses one oscillator and one sub-oscillator with independent or combined controls) with signal augmentation via a single delay unit.
These pieces betray their outward-facing and topical presentation as "noise" in the same ways both of Fontana's prior releases at Psoma have also defied expectation. To be clear, they *are* noise, but this would be a reductive and insufficient description of the recordings, because they feel warm and carefully shaped, directed in a way that never necessarily feels overly controlled or composed, but rather, more like a performer using an instrument rather than a noise-maker enjoying a loud racket with reckless abandon.
Certainly, there is a time and place for both approaches, especially here in the Psoma catalog, but Fontana's work always feels that little bit more deliberate, and this deliberation (for us, at least) translates into an accessible and approachable sound that could very well bridge the gap between first-time "noise music" listeners and seasoned geeks like myself. "Noise Fantasia" truly has something to offer everyone who is either passingly or deeply interested in abstract sound design and experimental music.
