The Shrine has overtime been identified as an apparatus for sonic transmission. My thesis maps the evolution of intergenerational expression, using architecture to facilitate the shift in frequency from the indigenous to the contemporary. Slide 1 - Traditional & Indigenous Culture Celebration: The design intent here is to ground the visitor in the rhythmic origins of the culture. This program utilizes the space as a vessel for indigenous storytelling and ritual, anchoring the architectural form in the specificity of traditional performance structures. Slide 2 - Contemporary Afrobeat/Afrobeats Performances: The space undergoes a metamorphosis as the sun sets. The architecture is engineered to respond to the high-energy demands of modern club culture, transforming the arena into a site of global, electric expression. The transition between these two modes of performance proves that the contemporary movement is not a break from the past, but an evolution of the self. By designing for the full spectrum of this rhythm, the building acts as a catalyst for cultural identity to remain in constant motion. #ArchitectureThesis #EvolutionOfSound #RhythmicDesign #Afrobeats #Performancedesign

The re-imagination of the New Afrika Shrine is built on the interplay between deep history and active production. The spatial strategy functions as a conduit, closing the gap between ancestral grounding and future-facing innovation. Slide 1 - Spiritual Connection & Rest: I designed this program to carve out a necessary silence. The architecture facilitates a sanctuary for meditation and ancestral dialogue, allowing the visitor to tap into the foundational spirit that birthed the Afrobeat movement. This quietude is the bedrock of the space. Slide 2 - Youth Development & Talent Showcase: That stillness fuels the momentum of the studio. This day is a laboratory for sound, designed to transition the visitor from reflection to action. By housing workshops and creation spaces within the same footprint, the building ensures that the youth are not just observing history, but actively inheriting it, using the architecture to articulate their own voices. #ArchitectureThesis #SpatialNarrative #AncestralGrounding #youthculture #NewAfrikaShrine

Throwing it back to my Master of Architecture thesis: The Temple of Afrobeat(s) completed in 2020. This project re-imagines the iconic New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, transforming it from a simple venue into a multi-functional sanctuary that honors its history as a site of civic resistance and community. Over the next few posts, I’ll be breaking down the specific programming that anchors this design. What if we looked at the Shrine as more than just a nightclub? To activate this space, part of its programming is structured around the civic life of the city: Slide 1 - Socio-Political Discourse (Yabis): A dedicated day for critical debate and community dialogue, honoring the site’s historical role as a center for resistance and intellectual exchange. Slide 2 - Community Engagement: A day focused on shared activities and collective projects, reinforcing the “third space” function that the Shrine has always served for the people of Lagos. #ArchitectureThesis #NewAfrikaShrine #LagosArchitecture #NigerianCivicDesign #UrbanRenewal

In Nkwo’s courtyard, the architecture serves as a repository for lineage. The space is articulated through a series of human figures and symbolic markers that mirror the divine family of Ala. The statues - inspired by the formal language of Ikenga figures, Mmuo masks, Ofo sticks and ancient Igbo-Ukwu artifacts - are not mere additions; they are structural anchors that charge the environment with a specific spiritual rhythm. By integrating these traditional Igbo symbols into a contemporary royal layout, the courtyard is transformed into a gathering place for generations. It is an exploration of how built space can act as a vessel for history, meaning, and the enduring power of heritage. Shout Out to @guru.animation for his incredible work putting this final VFX rendering together.

The anatomy of a palace. Nkwo’s space is a royal sanctuary designed around the concept of a “spatial embrace.” The layers of the building are meant to wrap around you like the cloth Igbo mothers use to carry their children, a physical form of safety and care. I organized the courtyard with an axial clarity to reflect her disciplined and balanced personality. It’s a space that celebrates order and the quiet strength of motherhood, where every pillar and statue serves a purpose in the larger story of protection and identity.
