tonight ☆ @ofthe___sun returns to @rodeo.bk + @cwwradioshop @rik.kan @funkin.donut shares his pick for tonight’s dance floor — “Dona Onete is an embodiment of a rare truth: art, when pure, can’t be confined to the superficialities of age. After a lifetime of living and serving her community as a professor on Amazon culture, Dona Onete fearlessly started a new chapter of her life by recording her debut album at the age of 73! In a music industry that favors the marketing of young faces and bodies, I just love it when an elder breaks through the machine with a record that’s fueled with the raw power that only a lifetime of lived experience can inform. Now 86, the Queen of Carimbo has 4 albums out in the world! One of my favorite tracks off her debut album Feitiço Caboclo is ‘Jamburana.’ It’s full of Dona Onete’s signature sensuality and playfulness - also has incredibly dynamic breaks that I’ve seen crowds across Brazil get crazy over.” #vinyldj #recordcollector free rsvp in bio, 9-2am

@ofthe___sun warms up the @rodeo.bk sound system tomorrow, fri may 1st 🌞 [9p - 2a free! rsvp link in bio] @rachelonrotation shares a selection from her collection for tomorrow’s party ⊹ ࣪ ˖ “This copy of Ed Watson And His Brass Cirlce’s ‘Hot Soca’ has accompanied me to many gigs — with the euphoric cover of McFadden & Whitehead’s ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now’ being my first love on this record. I remember earlier @ofthe___sun days I would drop this track to our dancers’ delight. Ed Watson — aka Dr. Soca AKA ‘The King of Soca’ to many — played a major role in the development of the Soca genre. His approach to Soca was especially unique due to his Latin-influenced arrangements. He lived in Carenage, Trinidad — where he was too far to pick up the signals of the two local radio stations but COULD access signals for Latin-influenced music from Venezuela. This was one of the many influences that helped develop his unique Soca and Calypso sound. There’s nothing more fun that digging in your own record collection to rediscover tracks and B sides that you never fully appreciated on first listen. In the last few months, I’ve come to love this sumptuous cover of Herbert Albert’s ‘Rise’ - this is such a great track to set the tone for the evening or as a slower jam as the night comes to a close. While Ed Watson was known for his original songs, he had an even greater impact due to his ability to reimagine classic songs in his own distinct flavor of Soca and Calypso 🌞 see you on the dancefloor!” #vinyldj #recordcollector

we’re so excited to be returning to @rodeo.bk | @cwwradioshop this friday, may 1st 🌎 @vikmatic shares his pick for @ofthe___sun — free rsvp in our bio “A pickup from Brazil! I ‘re-discovered’ Trio Ternura while driving in São Paulo with @gummiranda , @katchinab and @jamesparkjp , when @gummiranda played one of their tracks in the car (which I can’t remember now). I had known about them because of their track ‘A Gira’, but never really dove into their music. They were a Brazilian sibling vocal group that emerged in the mid-1960s and became known for blending MPB, soul, funk and Jovem Guarda pop. The core members were siblings Jurema, Jhusara, and Robson Lourenço da Silva. Hearing that track in the car got me super interested in the group. And coincidentally, the next day I found a 7-inch record of theirs at a store in downtown São Paulo (at a record mall with 40+ record stores!). The two tracks on this 7-inch aren’t available digitally and the A side isn’t even available on YouTube! Both sides are incredible so it was tough for me to pick one, but I decided to go with the funky ‘ETA ETA’ track on side B, released in 1977. Shout out to @gummiranda for getting me back on to this group ⚡️Excited to play this one on Friday.” #vinyldj #recordcollector

@ofthe___sun is TONIGHT at @rodeo.bk @cwwradioshop 9-2, free rsvp on RA + in our bio @vikmatic is packing his bag with some killer selects - “Hamlet Minassian is an Armenian musician, born in Iran, and emerged during a period when Armenian identity was being actively preserved through music following the dispersal of Armenians after the early 20th century. I discovered this record at a private DJ set I did, hosted by @bestendeavors . The whole album is incredible. It is a blend of traditional Armenian folk melodies with jazz, funk, and psychedelic rock. The track I’m particularly excited to play for the Of the Sun dancefloor is ‘Al Elnim’. It revolves around a repetitive melodic motif with cyclical phrasing driven by modal melodies that reflect Middle Eastern / Armenian tonal systems. See you tonight!!! ⚡️☀️” #vinyldj #recordcollector

tomorrow, saturday march 28 🌎🌞 @ofthe___sun brings the heat to the @rodeo.bk dancefloor — free rsvp in bio. let’s dive into @arjun___shah ’s select for the night: “A rare gem from the Kassav’ orbit, Cida Desvarieux, sister of Jacob Desvarieux and one of the founders of Kassav’, cut this extraordinary track for her self-titled 1984 LP, produced and backed by the band. Where much of the era’s Antillean output was chasing the zouk crossover sound, ‘Ka and Fire’ goes the other direction. The track stays true to its name and literally throws you into the fire with its immediate start, rooted deep in Guadeloupean Ka drum tradition. It’s built on a driving rhythm with a 4-beat hi-hat and bell timeline spanning a rolling 3+3 six-pulse cycle, which creates an almost lurching forward feeling to move your body to. Sometimes I’ll include the outro of the previous track, ‘Dilemme,’ in my mix, thus creating a little air on the dancefloor to make the intro hit even harder.”

@ofthe___sun returns to @rodeo.bk this Saturday 🪩 (free rsvp in bio) — let’s dive into @rik.kan @funkin.donut ’s pick for the dance floor… “‘Fale de Mim’ or ‘Talk About Me’ by Germannu, is a irresistibly dreamy track that’s been stuck in my head ever since I finally tracked down an OG copy in Germannu’s home state Espírito Santo, Brazil, a few weeks ago. This incredibly difficult to find 12” was made in 1983 after Germannu left his family farm for Rio to try his luck as a professional musician. The lyrics in ‘Fale de Mim’ are pretty deceivingly feisty, occupying some intersection between light+breezey and battle rap. As you probably gathered from the album cover, Germannu had impeccable style and he didn’t hide it. As the story goes according to @notesonajourneyrecords research from their reissue, his family were successful cocao farmers.. he had a nice ride.. nice clothes.. so naturally he had haters in town. This track comes for them head on: ‘Of I were them I’d want to be me too. Say good things. Say bad things. As long as you’re talking about me.’ Damn..” #vinyldj #recordcollector

@ofthe___sun returns to @rodeo.bk this Saturday, March 28 (free rsvp in bio) 🦋 @rachelonrotation shares her selection for opening up the dancefloor ✧˖°! — “I have a deep love for collecting and playing South African records — especially Bubblegum, Kwaito, + Boogie from the mid 80s - 90s. The music from this period was a multi-faceted reflection of new electronic sounds, local languages and traditions, inbound Western influences, and a turbulent political climate. Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala was one of the most prominent artists during this time, playing with beloved South African bands like Harari and Umoja (plus his own band Image). Lungile Masitha was his brief studio project with his friend Jimmy Mngwandi; one that he created as an outlet for self-expression. Both tracks on this project are perfect for warming up a dance floor and settling into the movement of the night. ‘Vuyani’ is my personal favorite of the two — sung in his native language Tsogan with local kids singing the choruses.” #vinyldj #recordcollector

tonight ! @ofthe___sun brings a night of all vinyl, funky global selects to @rodeo.bk @cwwradioshop ⭐️ (9pm-2am, free rsvp in bio) @rachelonrotation guides us through her pick for the OTS dancefloor: “Mike Umoh was a prolific Nigerian drummer in the mid/late 70s - late 80s, both releasing his own music and playing for bands like Bongos & The Groovies and Bassey Black & The Natty Messiah. I recently got my hands on a copy of his record Dreaming at @recordcitybk , and have fallen in love with nearly every beat on this record. My favorite is boogie track ‘Do It’ — not only because of the addictively groovy blend of keyboard, percussion, and horns — but the simplicity of the track name. Without words, the encouraging, driving rhythm encourages action and movement on the dancefloor.” #vinyldj #recordcollector
