An oldie but a goodie at We Rise Gallery in Downtown LA. It’s completely bombed by graffiti now, but fun to look back on it when the paint was fresh. Although I’ve been focusing on murals more since having kids, I’ll always love my film work (👀@miriamhellmann ) It’s the skills and work ethic I developed as an IATSE 729 Set Painter that have prepared me to pivot and adapt. After the Eaton Fire and vandalism at @pasadenajewishtempleandcenter this mural was created with students and community members as a symbol of hope and rebuilding. I worked with the students to come up with the concepts for the mural and kids of all ages helped finish off the painting. The older kids were able to pick out a design of their choosing and paint it on the border of the mural.
We built the mural around California flora and fauna as symbols of resilience and renewal. In particular, the California native fire poppy germinate after smoke from a fire, symbolizing beauty from the ashes. The stained glass look was inspired by the Temple’s famous Ark doors.

Mixing day 🎨 By the time I get to the job site my goal is to be completely ready to go, and that involves a lot of organization and planning in advance. Pre-mixing, labeling everything and making a “map” for my assistants- which will include kids- takes all the questions out of the process. I print and laminate my renderings but color match to the digital rendering. And since I adjust all of my colors instead of buying off the shelf (like a psychopath) I make swatches so I or my client can easily rematch if the mural is damaged #novacolor #mural #colormixing
Putting the finishing touches on my community mural design for @artoverhatecollective and @pasadenajewishtempleandcenter , which was lost in the Altadena fires. The mural will represent the strength of community and nature coming back and will feature spaces for kids to draw their own symbols of hope, resilience, and regrowth in the bottom empty sections.
