With a mostly humid environment, the Tweed Valley enjoys a high rainfall. At times this results in extreme flooding events, but for the most part it means a lush, green valley that avoids the worst of Australian droughts.
The Tweed Valley used to have some 600 dairies. The milk and cream was so rich that farmers would often throw the milk away to enable them to get the cream to market. Fast forward to 2022 and only a few dairies remain. Farming lands have gradually given way to green corridors and trees. If you view overhead imagery of the valley from a hundred years ago, there is now a vast increase of trees and rainforest.
Nature has been designed to recover quickly from deforestation and natural disasters. Over time the Tweed Valley has actually become more green. Residents now care for the environment that surrounds them and, to their credit, the valley enjoys the benefits of their stewardship.
In an age where media soundbites and special interest groups demand more, more, more… it’s clear that in the Tweed at least, a reasonable balance has been struck between industry and the environment, between caring for the land and earning a living from it.
