@offshootdot collection “Root”, led by Sangwha Yim, is a powerful reflection on the bond between mother and daughter. Inspired by her own story, Sangwha spoke with seven models about their mothers, casting each one based on that deep connection. Resulting in a moving photo series where each daughter dances in garments shaped by their roots and cared for by loving hands. 🙌

[ㄱㅈㅈㅇ 프로젝트] 한글날을 맞아 타이포 ㄱㅈㅈㅇ을 올린다. 한옥을 해체하고 그 속에 드러난 문양을 추적하며 우리의 잊혀진 문양이 서양에선 어떻게 미학이되고 발전했는가를 발견했다. 아르누보는 수공예 자연 그리고 자포니즘의 영향으로 생성된 서양미학이다. 미학의 발현과 발전은 정치 경제 사회 전반적 영향과 함께한다. 전쟁속 여성들의 손 재주, 기술이라고 말하고 싶다. 그들의 손기술이 전쟁의 폐허 속에서 무역 혹은 침략 행위를 통해 들어온 동양의 자연적 이미지와 만나 꽃피웠다. 전쟁 후 남성들이 다시 돌아오고 그들의 상징적 라인과 동양의 형식이 만나 직선적 미학인 아르데코가 등장했다. 이 서양 미학의 역사 속 자포니즘은 무엇을 지칭하는 것일까. 자포니즘 속에 숨겨진 우리 한국의 미학이 있다. 식민지배시절의 역사 역시 우리의 역사이고 그 속의 민중들의 그림 그리고 색감은 다른 곳에서 대우받고 발현되고 우리는 정작 잊고 있다. 역사는 기록하고 기억하며 존중하는 자들에게 주어진다고 생각한다. 공중정원 프로젝트의 하나의 과정이자 결과물로 한글 글씨체를 디자인했다. 이 두 서양의 미학을 섞어서. 곡선과 직선을 섞어서. - In celebration of Hangul Day(한글날), I am unveiling the Aerial Garden typography, ㄱㅈㅈㅇ. I deconstructed a Hanok and traced the patterns revealed within, discovering how our forgotten designs have evolved into aesthetics in the West. Art Nouveau emerged as a Western aesthetic influenced by handicrafts, nature, and Japonism. The expression and development of aesthetics are closely tied to broader political, economic, and social contexts. I want to highlight the craftmanship and skills of women during wartime. Their artistry flourished when it met the natural imagery of the East, brought in through trade amidst the ruins. After the war, men returned, and their symbolic lines, combined with Eastern forms, gave rise to the straight-line aesthetics of Art Deco. In this history of Western aesthetics, what does Japonism truly refer to? Hidden within Japonism is the beauty of Korea. Even during the colonial period, our history continued. The art and colors of the people from that time have been celebrated elsewhere, yet we have forgotten them. I believe that history is given to those who record and remember it. As part of the Aerial Garden project, I designed Hangul typography, blending these two Western aesthetics, mixing curves and straight lines. 가장 가까이 있는 한옥이 소외된 사회는 서양의 것만을 좇는 현대사회와 닮아있다. 프로젝트 공중정원은 한옥의 해체 과정에서 떨어진 짚과 부숨에서 나타난 문양들, 아르누보 아르데코의 서양 미학이 메인 레퍼런스이자 재료이다. 짚은 공중정원 속 살아남아 숨쉬고 있으며, 병풍과 짚을 사용한 스컵쳐는 신성한 공간을 상징한다. 그림 속 사슴들은 뭉쳐져있고 한마리의 사슴만 소외되어있다. 퍼포먼스형식의 컬렉션은 소외된 것들 원속의 그늘진 공간속의 가치들을 재조명한다. 지금의 소외와 빛이 있는 곳은 누가 정한 것인가.라는 질문을 던진다. 퍼포먼스 디자인과 플로우를 구성하며 이를 실현한 퍼포머를 찾는 것은 하나의 챌린지 였다. 몸으로서의 언어를 구사하는 아트프로젝트보라와의 협업을 통해 오랜기간 연구해온 주제의 실현이 가능했다. 함께해준 @art_project_bora , 최소영안무팀장님과 6명의 무용수 분들에게 깊은 감사를 전한다. 더불어 기계의 구현과 제작을 도와준 @o.eun______ 모든것을 함께한 @lee_hyejeong_kim 와 @j2x3sh 🙏🏻 - A society that marginalizes hanok resembles the modern world that solely chases after Western ideals. Project 공중정원 draws its main reference and materials from the patterns that emerge from the straw and debris that fell during the dismantling of the hanok, as well as Western aesthetics such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The straw breathes life into the Sky Garden, and the sculptures made from screens and straw symbolize sacred spaces. In the paintings, the deer gather together while one deer is left isolated. The performance-style collection sheds light on the value of the marginalized elements within the shadowed spaces of the original whole. It raises the question: who determines the current marginalization and the spaces illuminated by light? Designing the performance and flow, and finding performers to realize this vision, was a challenge. The long-researched theme was brought to life through the collaboration with @Art_Project_Bora , which masterfully communicates the language of the body. I extend my deepest gratitude to Art Project Bora, main choreographer So-Young Choi, and the six choreographers who participated. [공중정원dot] 누하동, 잊혀지고 쌓여진 공간을 여름의 시작에 해체했습니다. 2024 여름날 다양하고 아름다운 개인들이 모여, 해체한 공간에 새로운 숨결들을 가득 채웠습니다. 그 여정을 온라인으로 먼저 소개합니다. 공간은 8월 마지막날 가오픈합니다. 오프라인 공간이 주는 힘을 함께 나누고 싶습니다. At the beginning of summer, we dismantled a forgotten and layered space in Nuha-dong. Throughout the summer of 2024, diverse and beautiful individuals gathered to fill the space with new life. We are excited to introduce this journey online first. The space will have its soft opening on the last day of August. We look forward to sharing the power of this offline space with you.
