Ryan Kennelly’s 1975 Ford F-100 Custom 4x4 build took a major hit when the truck was stolen mid-project, vandalized, stripped, and covered in black paint. Instead of walking away, Ryan used the setback as motivation to rebuild it harder. He shortened the longbed into a 117-inch-wheelbase shortbed, saved the factory side toolbox, and returned the truck to its original Wimbledon White. Now with more than 33,000 miles since completion, this F-100 is no trailer queen.

This 1997 Ford E-350 takes the classic work van platform in a much tougher direction. The build centers on a 1998 5.9-liter 12-valve Cummins swap, backed by an ATS-built Ford 4R100 automatic and supported with Diesel Conversion Specialists hardware. Key pieces include the Cummins-to-Ford adapter plate, SFI-certified flex plate, dedicated E-series engine mounts, conversion exhaust manifold, downpipe, heavy-duty gear reduction starter, and P-pump throttle cable.
For trail use, the van moves beyond a simple engine swap with a New Process NP271 transfer case and Ford Super Duty axles front and rear, giving it real 4x4 strength and parts support.
Weld-it-yourself bumpers add to the functional, hands-on approach.

Each May, the Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) holds its annual Mudfest event. Held at Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, WA, journalists evaluate different AWD and 4WD vehicles on the pavement and in the dirt (and, of course, the mud). The vehicle with the highest marks earns the NWAPA Outdoor Vehicle of the Year award.

BJ Kohlleppel’s 1967 Kaiser Jeep M715 is a heavily modified military truck built for travel, camping, light off-road use, and towing his Toyota-based rock crawler.
Starting with a non-running M715 he bought in 2012, BJ rebuilt the truck in 2021 around an Optimizer 6500 6.5-liter V8 diesel, NV4500 five-speed manual transmission, and Ford NP205 transfer case.
The drivetrain is backed by a Super Duty Dana 60 front axle, GM 14-bolt rear axle, lockers at both ends, 4.56 gears, hydro-assist steering, and 40-inch Pro Comp XTerrain tires. The suspension uses ContiTech air bags for adjustable ride height, with Bilstein and Rancho shocks.
A modified CUCV service bed turns the truck into a compact overlanding setup with heat, air conditioning, hot water, shower, refrigerator, generator, bed, and storage.
BJ regularly uses the M715 on trails and at off-road parks in Texas and Arkansas.

Ford is launching the first-ever Super Duty Carhartt package for 2027 on XLT Crew Cab single-rear-wheel 4×4 pickups. The package combines unique styling cues, all-terrain equipment, added protection, and a purpose-built interior inspired directly by Carhartt’s rugged workwear heritage.
Ford says the package includes a unique dark-painted grille, 20-inch machined and painted wheels, LT275/65R20E all-terrain tires, textured off-road running boards, a Tough Bed spray-in bedliner, Carhartt-inspired seating materials, LED lighting upgrades, and exclusive Carhartt graphics throughout the truck.
The seats use unique Carhartt-inspired cloth material modeled after the brand’s iconic Duck Canvas fabric. The material was engineered with abrasion resistance and soil and liquid repellency specifically to handle abuse from dirty gear, wet clothing, tools, and long-term wear.

Bradley Kummler’s 1990 Ford Bronco II has come a long way from a clean Kentucky find with a 2.9L V6 and mild lift.
Built for serious rockcrawling, it now runs a fuel-injected 347 stroker V8, C4 automatic, Atlas 2 transfer case, locked axles, 4.88 gears, coilovers, and 40-inch Maxxis tires on beadlock wheels.
Bradley replaced the factory front suspension with a narrowed high-pinion Dana 44 and built a four-link rear setup to keep the rig low, stable, and capable on hard trails.
The Bronco II also has a rebuilt roof and driver-side sheet metal after a flop at Windrock Park, followed by a garage-applied Fire Red Pearl paint job.
With a boxed frame, winch, upgraded bumpers, and more changes planned, including a roll cage and full-width axles, this Bronco II is still evolving.

Mitsubishi officially leaned all the way into its playful, mud-splattered, overland-curious side, and we are absolutely here for it. At Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, the brand rolled out what it called the “Delica Festival — unleash your playful spirit”, and the vibe was less buttoned-up auto show and more adorable off-road block party. At this year’s Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Jesse Coombs showed what a 1942 Willys MB can still do on slickrock. The 84-year-old WW2 Jeep took on difficult trails with simple mechanical grip, light weight, a Go Devil engine, and original-style non-directional tires.
While newer Jeeps brought more power, longer wheelbases, air conditioning, and modern trail protection, the vintage flatfender proved that careful line choice and low weight still matter.
The group tested classic obstacles, including Mickey’s Hot Tub, where the Willys first struggled with fuel starvation on steep angles. Jesse returned the next day with Nitto tires and drove out successfully.
The story is a reminder that off-road capability does not always require huge horsepower or expensive electronics. A basic flatfender with smart upgrades can still be a serious rockcrawler, especially when the driver understands the terrain and keeps the setup simple.
