Are you in Canada and want to see 2,000 year old Roman footwear? 👞
With over 100 shoes on display, Unearthing Vindolanda. Footwear from the Edge of the Empire is an exhibition hosted by the Bata Shoe Museum in partnership with The Vindolanda Trust to bring us closer to our distant past through the juxtaposition of ancient and modern footwear.
Located just south of Hadrian’s wall, Vindolanda was an auxiliary military fort with an active extramural settlement that housed traders, veterans, family members of soldiers, craftspeople and the like. The footwear discovered at this site encompasses the men, women, and children who lived, worked, and called Vindolanda home.
Exhibit is now open at the Bata Museum in Toronto. Come check it out!

Ancient Roman graffito scratched into a Samian pottery sherd found today offers a strikingly human glimpse into life at Vindolanda.
Tracing the lines with your fingers creates an immediate connection to their maker, as if, for a moment, the centuries fall away and the distance between past and present disappears.
