I’m super excited today because it’s not often I get to talk about a black metal from Pakistan! Primaeval just released their debut four-track EP, “Horcrux,” in December 2021, and one listen will tell you this four-piece knows a thing or two about making really good, heavy music. Formed in 2020 in Karachi, Pakistan, the group consists of Farhan Rathore (vocals), Syed Athar (guitars), Abdul Moeed (guitars), and Byzma Aref (vocals).
Primaeval takes inspiration from Metallica, Tool, and Opeth, and their sound has elements of doom and progressive metal. “Bleed” from the debut EP is a good starting point. After an eerie build up, “Bleed” takes off, right into a riff that’s perfect for headbanging. This track clocks in at over nine minutes, but with the ebbs and flows of the song very well balanced, it never overstays its welcome. I love what I’m hearing from Primaeval, and today’s great song.
