I had an incredible experience meeting Richard Patrick of Filter, who is a genuinely cool and kind person. He even autographed two of my CDs for me (Filter’s “Short Bus” and self-titled “Army of Anyone”). I actually interviewed him for his duo project know as “A Place To Kill” (APTK) alongside Jim Louvau, vocalist of @ThereIsNoUsBand and an acclaimed photographer and music video director. Look for my interview with these guys in zine issue 13. I also got to hang out during Filter’s soundcheck, which felt like my own private concert, and an unforgettable lead-in to the show. The band delivered their signature high-energy industrial rock sound flawlessly, with Richard Patrick’s vocals sounding as powerful as ever. Their chemistry and infectious energy made the performance that much more memorable as they mixed classic hits with an incredible new track, “Snakes in the Grass,” from their upcoming album that might be titled “The Antidote”. Midway through the set, Richard introduced “something nice and pretty because we’re about that too,” before launching into “Take a Picture,” a longtime favorite of mine that still gives me goosebumps. The crowd sang along, and the backing vocals sounded even stronger than the original recording. Filter closed with “Hey Man Nice Shot” from their landmark 1995 debut album Short Bus, though the moment was briefly disrupted when an overly aggressive fan caused a scuffle before being removed from the venue. This Procreate design from 2018 popped up in my photo memories tonite. 6 years after I drew it I randomly met @filter_richard_patrick@officialfilter and we collaborated on the Algorithm: Ultra Edition. I had 100% forgotten about this design I made, and the original release of The Algorithm had a cracked astronaut helmet. So fate intervened and Rich and I both immediately agreed to feature the full dead Astronaut, because it made sense. A complete full circle moment without realising it. Life is awesome. The 3d print still awaits paint. He’s pretty rad, pure white. #filterband #3dprinting
