One of my very first drawings of Scar was surprisingly close to the final design. Getting him approved for The Lion King was actually fairly straightforward. The main note from the directors? Adding the distinctive cheek hair that helped define his silhouette and personality. #Scar #TheLionKing #DisneyAnimation #CharacterDesign #2dAnimation

I recently came across these early drawings I created as pose suggestions for the Hercules maquette. Before the sculpt was finalized, I explored poses and expressions to help shape Hercules’ personality in three dimensions. Always fun to revisit how much character can come through in simple sketches. #AndreasDeja #Hercules #DisneyAnimation #CharacterDesign #AnimationArt

Originally broadcast as a segment of Walt Disney’s “Disneyland” TV show to promote “Sleeping Beauty” (1959), “4 Artists Paint 1 Tree” became a popular educational short as audiences watched four different Disney artists paint a tree in his own way. Here’s a rare photo of those talented artists with their final work: Josh Meador, Marc Davis, Eyvind Earle, and Walt Peregoy. #disneyart #disneyartists #disneyanimator #disneyhistory

If want to create characters that truly resonate, this is where to start 👇 Animating Lilo (Lilo and Stitch, 2002) was like Method Acting. Here are 4 key lessons animators, actors, and storytellers can take from Disney Animator, Andreas Deja, and apply immediately: 1. Emotional POV first — before animating a script, pinpoint exactly what your character is feeling in this moment 2. Behavior over aesthetics — quirks, reactions, history, where is this design choice coming from? 3. Internal logic — every action has a reason, what is going through your character's mind before they snap? 4. Performance thinking — act it out before you animate so you can feel instead of draw your character into life. Which one do you focus on most: emotion, behavior, or design? 👇 (🎵Music by @meltsyjinx 🙏)

Early sketches of Beauty & the Beast’s Gaston. The studio even gave me fitness magazines for reference - I pulled poses from those and started shaping the character. And yes, I tried giving him a mustache (I really wanted it to stay). From early explorations to his wedding look, he kept evolving… until he became the Gaston we know from the film. #AndreasDeja #Gaston #DisneyAnimation #CharacterDesign #AnimationProcess

We adore our dog Doris more than words can say - and she’s one of my everyday art inspirations. Sketching the everyday, especially animals, was how I really learned to draw. There’s something special about slowing down, observing, and letting a pencil celebrate the life right in front of you. That’s one of the great joys of being an artist. #sketching #artistlife #drawingpractice #doglove #everydayinspiration

This Earth Day is taking my thoughts back to where it all really started. These were taken at the Duisburg Zoo in Germany —I went back last fall, stood in that same environment, and sketched again. Same curiosity, same connection — just a FEW years later. Nature has always been the greatest teacher. Grateful for places like this, and for the animals that continue to inspire every line. HAPPY EARTH DAY! #EarthDay #DuisburgZoo #DrawingFromLife #CharacterAnimation #handdrawn

Disney villains aren’t just evil… they’re uncomfortably specific. Andreas Deja, the mind behind some of the most iconic Disney Villains, breaks it down. Great villains often have: 🎭 Distinct quirks, something that makes you itch 😈 Off-color humor, they laugh where they shouldn’t 🧠 Twisted logic, their world and desires actually makes sense… to them 🗣️ A revealing sidekick Whether you’re into animation, anime, or manga, the make them stick, they've gotta be specific! Fun fact 👀 On Hercules, Deja was originally assigned Hades but chose to pivot into a different archetype. Deja is also responsible for creating the Disney Hercules we all know roday! The hot-headed menace known as Disney's Hades was brought to life by Gerald Scarfe. #Disney #Villains #CharacterDesign #Animation #Anime Manga Storytelling WritingTips Pixar ArtOfAnimation CreateCharacters Screenwriting

I thought I’d share a small experimental scene from Mushka - exploring the curiosity of a young cub as he tracks, captures, and gently studies a butterfly. Presented like a flip book, the performance comes through small shifts in timing, expression, and intent - that’s where life emerges on the page. You can watch Mushka now on major streaming platforms. #AndreasDeja #Mushka #AnimationProcess #CharacterAnimation #Flipbook AnimationArt StreamingNow
