The absence of a trophy import ban in the King’s Speech is more than symbolic, it matters.
The King’s Speech sets the government’s legislative agenda. By not including this measure, the Labour government chose not to advance a policy that would have had real consequences for conservation funding, wildlife management, and rural communities that depend on sustainable hunting.
There is also a well-established body of global conservation policy supported by organizations like the International Union for Conservation of Nature that recognizes sustainable use including regulated hunting, as a critical and effective conservation tool.
But make no mistake, the fight is far from over. This issue could still be reintroduced as a private member’s bill, and efforts to restrict hunting are ongoing. Now is not the time to step back, it’s time to stay engaged, informed, and ready to act.

SCI leadership met this week with Deputy Secretary of the Interior Kate MacGregor to advance key priorities for hunters and sustainable-use wildlife conservation. 🚨
During the meeting, SCI expressed appreciation for Secretarial Order 3447, which protects and expands hunting access on Department lands, and discussed critical issues including species delisting, international regulation, and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.
