the first time i ever encountered the amish/mennonites irl was while on a cross-country road trip across america.
while each community sets its own rules around technology use, lots of them frequently take amtrak to meet family, conduct business, and go across the border to mexico, where they have an easier time paying for health care with cash since they have no health insurance.
went back and forth on publishing these, particularly given their views around being photographed (they consider it vain and distasteful) and the intrusive nature of photography in general. but some part of my brain is now wired to document life around me, especially stuff like this, and i can’t seem to turn it off.
