As part of my role as Executive Creative Director of the British Arrows I’m in the very lucky position to curate the YOUNG ARROWS AWARDS and invite emerging talent to creatively direct the shows motion design and visual language.
All at BAHQ were very excited when JOROM SIMPSON accepted our invitation and assumed the role of Creative Lead for this year’s YOUNG ARROWS AWARDS - we all knew we would get something striking, playful and jazz-infused!
Here
@Outernet as a venue has challenges - none more than the sheer amount of pixels we needed to render to achieve our opening film at 50fps - tipping over 30 billion pixels!
Early feasibility studies established that with the time and resource available to realise Jorom’s compelling narrative piece, photorealism, and therefore, raytracing or any offline renders, were out. This determined the best route forward - A stylised aesthetic leveraging Unreal Engine’s Lumen light system, fast iteration cycles and speedy rendering!
Jorom’s narrative lent itself to running Realtime Physics Simulations direct in Unreal Engine baked using the engines in built Take Recorder. Once sequences were deterministic, additional Blueprint driven Procedural Animation elements were layered into each shot to enable complex interactions without the need to do any traditional animation keyframing.
I look forward to seeing what Jorom creates next and where his career will take him. He would be a dynamic addition to any creative and nurturing studio. Good luck Jorom 🙌
