May is National Bike Month, so we wanted to feature the popular 24+ mile mountain bike trail loop through Mohican-Memorial State Forest and Mohican State Park. 🚵🌲
This scenic trail winds through the hills and woodlands of one of Ohio’s most beautiful forested areas, with overlooks, bridges, and terrain for both beginner and advanced riders alike. Trailheads are located on State Route 3 across from Mohican State Park’s Class A Campground and on ODNR Mohican Road 51 near the former Mohican Youth Camp.
Have you ever biked this scenic loop?

Ever wondered how foresters measure a tree without climbing it? Because trees are cylindrical and taper as they grow, figuring out their size isn’t as simple as grabbing a tape measure. That’s why service foresters use a clever tool called a Biltmore stick to quickly estimate a tree’s diameter and height, helping landowners understand and manage the forests on their land.
Think you could do it? Try it yourself with PLT’s “Nature’s Sky Scrappers” activity in the K-8 activity guide.

Happy Arbor Day! Today we celebrate the trees that clean our air, shade our communities, and make Ohio a greener, healthier place to live.
Arbor Day started in Nebraska back in 1872 and quickly took root across the country, with Ohio proudly being one of the early adopters. Now, it’s celebrated nationwide, often by planting trees.
The Division of Forestry is proudly rooted in the spirit of Arbor Day and the mission of the Arbor Day Foundation. Our Urban Forestry program administers all Ohio Tree City USA, Tree Campus, and Tree Line programs, helping plant thousands of trees statewide. And this year, ODNR is supporting Ohio Girl Scouts in planting 250,000 trees, with the final tree set to go in the ground next month.
Ready to celebrate by planting your own tree? Check out our helpful tree‑planting guide linked in our bio.

Flowers🌻 play a crucial role in Ohio’s ecosystem. From keeping pollinators 🐝fed, to being used by wildlife for shelter or food, flowers are irreplaceable in our environment.🌾 Native flowers, because they are used to Ohio’s climate, have the ability to stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and improve water quality. So, Ohio flowers aren’t just pretty- they’re powerful! 🌺

🦇 Happy International Bat Appreciation Day!
Bats play a crucial role in forest ecosystems by consuming large numbers of night‑flying insects and helping maintain ecological balance. Here are a few forest‑friendly management ideas to support bat habitat on your property:
• Keep large dead trees (consult a professional before managing these) and trees with exfoliating bark, crevices, or cavities for roosting bats
• Maintain trees of the above characteristics located in sunny gaps in the tree canopy
• Skip pesticides and insecticides since bats eat insects
• Remove non‑native invasive plants to support a healthier forest and insect community.
Before acting, consider meeting with a State Forester to create a management plan tailored to your goals!
P.S. Want to start small? You can also support bats by adding a bat house, planting native species, leaving leaf litter, and reducing outdoor lighting!
