We believe that if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well. And a job that is done well is worth paying good money for. That's why we commit to paying a living wage to every employee at Oddly.
.
Using data aggregated by MIT, we found that a livable wage for a single person with no kids in KC was $2901 per month, or $16.75 an hour for a full-time hourly employee (as of October 2022.) We then surveyed baristas in Kansas City, and found that they are largely dependent upon the generosity of customers through tips for nearly 30% of their income. As a company, we felt the need to remove the fear and uncertainty that can come with relying on gratuity for a large portion of a person's income, particularly in an industry where tipping isn't always a consistent practice.
.
We decided to leverage tips as a tool to help us provide a living wage for our employees. In November 2019, we committed to a MINIMUM hourly pay rate after tips of $18/hr. If an employee’s average hourly wage including tips is ever under $18/hr, Oddly will make up the difference. If an employee’s average rate goes above $18/hr, it’s all theirs, with bi-annual re-evaluation for increases based on performance, company success, and increases in cost of living expenses. We've since increased that minimum to $19/hr, and will continue to re-evaluate this minimum long after this post is published.
.
In addition to a living wage and the perks you'd expect working at a coffee shop (free drinks, discounts on food and merch for all staff and a significant other/friend, free bags of coffee etc), we thought it was important to support our staff by immediately providing 45 hours of sick pay each calendar year, access to direct primary health care and paid vacation time. An important aspect of this for us was to also make it clear that taking time off for mental health reasons is equally as valid as if you came down with a virus or something else.

A quick guide to who we are, what we do and why we’re different. Cheers to (politely) giving the finger to the status quo! (Yes there’s a misspelling on slide 5… sorry mom!)

We switched to reusable glass for all to-go drinks in 2019. Given the astounding amount of paper and plastic coffee cups that end up in landfills each year, we felt it was a step we could take not only to limit the impact of our own operations, but hopefully move the needle a bit in our industry by showing it to be a beneficial practice. Even through the difficulties of the last two years, it’s been a very positive experience.
.
For just $1.50 (updated since the original posting of these slides), you get a reusable glass jar with lid and coozie for your drink. Bring it all back next time for your dollar back, or reuse it or swap out for a fresh jar for your next drink. It’s our customers’ continued support and participation that makes this work, so thanks for helping us try to break our unsustainable habits as coffee consumers. And remember, there’s no shame in bringing a large quantity back! As long as they’re in reusable condition we’ll take them and wash them to be put back in circulation!

I had the honor of creating a custom flash sheet for my friends over @oddly (PS it’s stained with their drip 😚)
Over my apprenticeship I spent 2 years working in the kitchen and it honestly was my favorite job up until I started tattooing, literally the best shop in KC! 😭💖
Anyways once the crew finishes special training they get a tattoo off of this sheet by me as a treat! ☺️🎉How SICK!
Thank you @pryson.myke for letting me do something so sick with the best crew around. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss working at such an amazing space! ☕️
