During the group residency at Access Gallery, I began collecting blue beads religiously, carrying the heavy symbolism of protection. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the embroidery piece done in time for the group show. So I stuck a needle 🪡 into it, promising to finish the artwork.
As a part of the programming of the show the artists were encouraged to give an artist talk ~ however, I was too exhausted to talk so instead I began throwing blue beads into the ground like farmers do with seeds. From there, in silence, we all organically began collecting them together. Reflecting on the current moment.
After the show, Eris gifted to me ceramic blue beads they had made from Raku firing. There on, I continued working on the piece. Showing the final outcome at Grunt Gallery

May all the blue beads hold us
One month into my three month artist residency @gibraltarpointto here on Menecing ~ the name means "On the island" (occupied Toronto island)
🌱🐦⬛🌱🐦⬛🌱
Recently learned that the arrival of Red-winged Blackbirds marks the start of spring here. Getting to witness this phase of transition and change feels relevant to these very moments of ongoing uncertainty. A calm holds this island, a breath ~ while elsewhere from Palestine, Lebanon to Iran are still facing rapid bombardment 💔
~•°• •°• •°• •°•~
From growing new seeds, preparing for the centre's garden, to tapping trees, learning how to make maple syrup, teaching myself how to weave, meeting fellow artists, witnessing their creativity, to continuing to tatreez I am grateful for these moments of calm, in such a harsh world.
