GRATEFUL GALLERY YOU DO DOODLE SEPT '25
It's funny how a simple doodle with no intended consequences can tell you a lot about where you are with your art. I love coming to these sessions with no expectations or plan and seeing what comes to me in the moment. In both sessions, I've brought different materials with me to see how that impacts my style: last month was a combination of oil pastels and paint markers, this month was fineliners and highlighters (shoutout to phil who lent me his brushmarker).
So what's the correlation between this month's and last month's doodles? What's actually bothering me? Mocking up this post, I noticed that without a plan, I ended up doing the same thing again - a frieze of characters inspired by my camera roll roughly forming some kind of pyramid shape. I'm happy with it, but I think next time I want to challenge myself more something more dynamic? A full scene maybe? I'm not sure. See you guys next month to see how I get on.

In Your Own Hand (2025)
I took this portrait of my Dad on a trip to Mongolia 6 years ago. Running at altitude was exhilarating. I love the colours, the light on his face, the feelings of joy and presence captured in his face. Before he passed away in November 2022, I shared with him my first tattoo: a pint of stout with his initial replacing the familiar logo - his life, his memory expressed as art on my body and part of me that I will forever be proud of.
A piece I made for the exhibition "Celebrating the Art and the Body". A collective exhibition by @iam_more_than hosted at @thealchemyexperiment . A truly special occasion and an honour to be part of such a special exhibition. Thank you @rosalindmain and @morgan_artstudio for the opportunity and to everyone who came in support.

01. REFLECTIONS:
(big ould writing piece below)
I have a film camera that I bought for 8 euro in Bilbao when I was there last summer. I had no idea whether it worked but thought it was worth the risk (and it was). I’ve always taken inspiration from the world around me and taken photos wherever I go. I think when you paint the world around you, it always has something extra about it. It’s not perfect - your painting doesn’t have to be either. I think the delayed gratification and the mystery of how your photo will turn out when using film really adds to this experience.
I’ve been taking a lot of photos of reflections recently - particularly “accidental reflections” in objects where reflection is not their primary purpose. I’ve also produced some accidental double exposures on film - it’s funny how the world gives in a way you’re not expecting it to.
I think that “accidental reflections” feel like a real life double exposure - two layers on one image telling two different stories simultaneously. I think this is very reflective (pun intended) of the way I develop my paintings. My favourite way to paint is to layer up my ideas - painting different images over and over each other on the same canvas. My final painting is often a collage of my process.
There’s something liberating in knowing the first strokes of paint you put on your canvas will merely provide contrast and background to the final outcome. The final outcome is composed of multiple exposures on the same canvas, a frozen moment in time, an accidental reflection.
