ā Stop rushing back to your catch position ā
Such a common flaw, adding a pause into the finish position can allow you to focus on the goal positions and mean you commit full to the entire stroke.

A strong core should be a foundation that every rower is looking to build.
It will ensure an efficient transfer of force from lower to upper body - reducing any power leakage through the stroke, and improving consistency stroke to stroke.
It will help maintain correct postures under fatigue, in turn reducing load on the lower back during longer or more intense efforts.
Better connection at the catch and stronger finish positions, and likely improve boat control and stability.
These 3 assessments will highlight any weaknesses and allow you to be specific in the core work you do.

About 12 years ago I saw a YouTube from @darkhorserowing
He said: āif you donāt have a good catch, you donāt have a good strokeā
Itās stuck with me, and always been the key pillar for building clients techniques.

Cross training:
Utilising different modalities within your training programme. Allowing you to accumulate higher volumes of aerobic work, without constantly loading the same muscles and joints. Reducing the risk of overuse injuries.
Rowing is a technical sport, often meaning under fatigue, the technique is the first thing to go. Cross training helps minimise fatigue in key areas allowing you to maintain quality with your key sessions.
I also find it very useful as an active recovery, especially after people have been out on the water for extended periods, nice way to stimulate some blood flow, and reduce some overall stiffness

Core training doesnāt need to be overly complicated, but it needs to be transferable.
The ability to resist extension and lateral flexion will ensure an efficient transfer of power throughout the stroke.
I think rotational strength is another key for rowers, especially ocean rowers. The tall kneeling Landmine option is one of my absolute favourites.
