Classified School Employee Week is observed this year from May 17 through May 23.
The week recognizes the essential contributions of classified employees who support students, families and school communities each day. From transportation, nutrition and maintenance services to instructional support and office operations, classified professionals help schools operate safely, effectively and efficiently.
Four Orange County middle school teams are advancing to the United States Academic Pentathlon National Finals in Nashville, Tennessee.
Representing Orange County are students from Gordon H. Beatty Middle School in Buena Park School District, McGarvin Intermediate School in Garden Grove Unified School District, and Fairmont Schools’ Historic Anaheim campus.
Also advancing is Hosler Middle School in Lynwood Unified School District, which competed in the Orange County regional event this year.

The Orange County Friday Night Live Partnership recognized two school chapters and an advisor during its annual Chapter Recognition Ceremony on May 13 at the Barclay Theatre in Irvine.
Chapter Excellence Awards were presented to El Modena High School in Orange Unified School District and McGarvin Intermediate School in Garden Grove Unified School District. Advisor Excellence honors went to Debbi Potts of Ralston Intermediate School.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s May Revision proposal includes a one-time $50 million investment to continue support for California’s Multi-Tiered System of Support framework, known as CA MTSS.
Led in part by OCDE, the statewide framework helps schools coordinate academic, behavioral, social-emotional and mental health supports for students.

Fifth-grade students from Loara and Orange Grove elementary schools in the Anaheim Elementary School District were named finalists in the 2026 Conga Kids Dance Championship, held May 7 at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
AESD Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Dr. Yadira Moreno also received a Visionary Award during the event.

Students from Valadez Middle School in Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District recently visited the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine through Project Zero Waste, a partnership between OCDE’s Inside the Outdoors program and OC Waste & Recycling.
The field trip gave students hands-on learning opportunities focused on sustainability, recycling and waste reduction.

At Golden View Elementary School, 324 students expand their hands-on learning experiences each day as they move between classroom instruction, environmental science lessons and time spent on their fully functioning, 2.5-acre school farm. 🐐🌾

Los Alamitos High School freshman Wesley Avery created a sensory station at his former elementary school to support students with special needs as part of his Eagle Scout project.
The station is now being used in Hopkinson Elementary School’s multi-aged classroom to provide students with additional opportunities for engagement and individualized support.
