“An entire Netflix worth of content is uploaded to YouTube every 90 minutes” *Cue audible gasp from the room* “In the UK, Netflix now accounts for more view time than all the other broadcasters and streamers combined (18-49 year olds”)” *Shocked faces and stunned silence* “And the way people watch it has changed - with TV being the most popular device - nearly at 50% of total view time” ____ This was my scripted opening for my three presentations at a careers day for my old school. And - to be fair - bar the audible gasps it went pretty much as planned. The stats did genuinely have an impact - because they are genuinely very interesting. YouTube is growing rapidly across all age groups as a home for people to watch programmatic-style content. And as this happens more and more publishers are moving into the space. We’ve seen the traditional broadcasters wake up to this - led by Channel 4. We’ve seen brands wake up to this led by the likes of Footasylum, Boohooman, etc. We’re seeeing print media wake up to this with The Sun and Times both investing heavily to improve their YouTube output. With all of this - I can only see the didgatl entertainment industry going one way. And it was great to share this excitement for our space with the next generation. Open their eyes to jobs in our industry and explain the sheer number of incredibly talented people it takes to pull off these shows. I’ll end as I ended my presentation a “Digital Entertainment isn’t just a passing fad - it’s the new era of Television.” (And one that I feel very lucky to be at the forefront of). #YouTube #DigitalEntertainment
