Featured in issue 22: SEEKING THE MEANING, FRANCES PALMER ( @francespalmer ) might just have it all figured out. Palmer lives and works at a historic home and barn, where, among other things, she tends a flotilla of raised beds within the fenced-off precincts of a disused tennis court. Beehives straddle a service line, the bees give her fresh honey and serve as pollinators. Visit at the right time of year, and you’ll be treated to a veritable fireworks display, as the dahlias, hollyhocks, and roses come into bloom. Go deeper in issue 22, link in bio. FLORRIE (@florrieshopny ), has brought its sensibility for contemporary and antique design to Bedford for just over a year, occupying the former country store and post office from circa 1838 that now also houses The Bedford Historical Society (@bedfordhistorical ). FLORRIE and Object & Thing are delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition of work by three Hudson Valley and Connecticut-based artists whose reverence for the preservation and imagination of the natural world also share an expression in metal: Ariel Dearie (@arieldeariestudio ), Carol Leskanic (@carolleskanic ) and Katie Stout (@ummmsmile ). The installation will include an arrangement of these artists’ objects upon a late 18th century Swedish cabinet, in contrast with the surfaces of Dearie’s hand-hammered brass candle holders, Leskanic’s water-gilded forms reminiscent of chanterelles and Stout’s treasure box of sorts, adorned with ceramic and bronze flowers. We hope you can join for the opening reception on Friday, November 7 from 5–7 PM. Please join us tomorrow to celebrate the opening of New York artist @kivamotnyk , a solo exhibition of fiber-based wall works, in collaboration with @object_thing . The opening reception will be followed at 5 pm with a talk between Kiva and Lauren Cornell (@lauren1cornell ), Artistic Director of the Hessel Museum, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. Motnyk spent time at Troutbeck during the summer months, collecting botanical materials from the property’s extensive gardens and partnering with chef @vinny_gilberti to re-purpose vegetable matter, such as onion skins, from the kitchen in order to make natural dyes for the works. The exhibition includes a site-specific commission for the library windows, along with a new body of work for the gallery space. Kiva Motnyk: Object & Thing at Troutbeck 515 Leedsville Road Amenia, NY 12501 September 27–November 30, 2025 Saturday, September 27 Opening Reception: 4–5 PM Artist’s Talk: 5–6 PM Photo by Cedric Gairard (@cedricgairard )

Featured in issue 14: @kivamotnyk harnesses nature’s bounty to create her kaleidoscopic textiles. Like artists who set up portable easels to capture the splendor of nature’s shifting moods, @thompsonstreetstudio founder, Motnyk, draws inspiration from hours spent walking the twenty-acre property outside Delhi, NY, she bought with her husband ten years ago. The rural landscape not only informs her palette but is also the source of her pigment. Kiva Motnyk is exhibitied with @object_thing at @troutbeck.ny 9/27-11/30, ‘25. ✍🏼 @sabinehrechdakian 📷 @carltond Subscribe to issue 21, launching early October, link in bio.

Megumi Shauna Arai (@oneflewup ), whose work is represented by Object & Thing, spent much of last summer as the inaugural participant in the Design Index program at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Library (@cooperhewitt @silibraries ). The research-based experience inspired her two textile Patch Books, an entirely new body of work for Arai. We are thrilled to share that Patch Book 1 has now been acquired for the permanent collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Library. We are grateful to so many at Cooper Hewitt for championing Arai’s work, most especially: Jennifer Bracchi (@jenlibrarian ), Alexandra Cunningham Cameron (@alexcunninghamcameron ) and Alexandra Hodkowski (@alexandra.hodkowski ). Patch Book 1, 2024, 40 page silk, linen and cotton book naturally dyed with madder, fustic, logwood, cutch, walnut, marigold, kakishibu, cosmos, pomegranate and indigo; 4 signatures with saddle-stitched binding.

Object & Thing is honored to present a solo exhibition of wood fired ceramic vessels by author, ceramist, gardener and photographer, Frances Palmer (@francespalmer ). Palmer’s ceramics practice has evolved over the past nearly forty years. The process of running a wood fired kiln, with much left up to nature, has been a more recent chapter after establishing her own wood fired kiln at her studio in Connecticut in 2018. For this exhibition, there are a range of forms, including: vases with pedestals, footed bowls, pitchers and tulipieres. As always, Palmer hand-mixes her glazes to her exacting formulas. Palmer’s vessels can all be considered functional. She has said about her work, “each piece, no matter how large or small, is considered and individual.” Frances Palmer: Wood Fired Vessels Object & Thing at Makié Creative Space 109 Thompson Street New York, NY 10012 May 13–17, 2025 Public Hours: 11 am–6 pm Photo by Frances Palmer
