"While there is so much harm and cruelty, the thing that is really at stake is the soul of our country. My parents left Iran to live in a democracy, where there are some basic protections for all people, where we elect our leaders fairly... And we are seeing all that crumble. That is what we’re up against. And we are not powerless. It is people that uphold democracy, not politicians. So we have to fight, resist, and use our power in every way possible to save the soul of our country."
Earlier this month, our Executive Director Roxana Norouzi joined Andrea Soroko Naar from the Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice NW for a conversation as part of @jcij.nw annual Dinner in Community. They spoke about faith, fighting authoritarianism, and why we do this work together -- because all people are inherently deserving of dignity.
All students deserve access to healthy, culturally appropriate meals at school. Afghan community members have been organizing for the district to provide halal meals in school. And last night, students in Kent testified at the school board meeting, calling on the district to include halal meals in their 2027 budget.
Now they need your help. If you live in Kent, use the link in our bio to sign our petition to the school board in support of halal meals.
This past Sunday -- Mother's Day -- our leaders joined SEIU members from across the state and La Resistencia to rally outside of the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. We stood in solidarity with all of the detained mothers, currently separated from their children. 💔

Mayor Mamdani showing elected leaders how to get work done! Closing a budget deficit while centering workers and the needs of the community is possible. Hopefully our WA state electeds are taking notes. ✍️
At a time when our federal voting rights are being stripped away, our elections and our votes are more important than ever. We need more folks in elected office who will stand with immigrants, fight for our democracy, and champion the issues that matter most.
We’re thrilled to announce our first slate of pro-immigrant candidates for the 2026 elections in Washington State. These candidates are running for re-election this year and have championed our issues and governed alongside us to win a state where immigrants and refugees are equal, valued and loved.

Friday was May Day and we were proud to march with our thousands of our friends and allies in Seattle, Yakima, and Vancouver to demand a country that puts workers over billionaires. We -- the people who make this country run -- are powerful and we are prepared to fight for a future where everyone can thrive!

May Day is about power building with workers, immigrants, and all our communities. ✊
I come from a union household, and I began my career as a labor organizer — first with the Oregon farmworkers union, and later with SEIU Local 6, where I organized janitors and service workers and served as a staff union president. Long before I ran for office, my work was about building worker power, fighting exploitation, and making sure all working people had a real voice in the decisions that affect their lives. That work will continue in my home county.
