I’m inspired by the work of @cdlhny and its supportive services for Hispanic NYers. Last night’s gala on Long Island raised scholarship $ to help high school students attend college and recognized honorees making a difference. Congratulations to all on an important night full of community spirit and solidarity.
The @jewishchildrensmuseum in Brooklyn does important work to celebrate Jewish history and culture. Last night’s gala was a special event – honoring Ari Halberstam’s memory, reminding us of the importance of confronting antisemitism and promoting empathy through education in Brooklyn and beyond.
@jcrcny unites and empowers the Jewish community, and last night’s 50th anniversary gala brought together NYers of all faiths and backgrounds. It’s important we stand united against hate. Congrats to the gala’s honorees, Merryl Tisch and Lauren Jupiter Weiss. Thank you for your dedicated service.
We found lost $ for @atinyhomeforgood to help people in Syracuse who struggle to afford housing and other basic needs. Search for a local organization in your area to see if they have unclaimed funds. See link in profile bio.
Proud to celebrate Bronx week alongside @bronxbpgibson ! I spoke with financial leaders, business owners, real estate brokers and other professionals about the importance of financial inclusion and my legislation which would provide greater access to banking services for more households and small businesses in New York.
A wonderful celebration of Albanian tradition and culture at last weekend’s Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu Fair in the Bronx. Thousands of Albanian Americans call NYC home, and it was a pleasure to recognize all that you contribute to the city and state.
Today I attended the New York State Police Officers Memorial Ceremony to honor the brave police officers killed in the line of duty. We will never forget the sacrifices they made to keep us safe. Every New Yorker deserves to return home safely at the end of the day. May their memory continue to be a blessing for their families.
We lost a wonderful poet, artist and advocate. Michele Voltaire Marcelin used her words and her art to lift us up, and even through her battle with cancer, never stopped living life to its fullest. She stood for freedom and justice for her fellow Haitians and for all people. I was honored to recognize her in 2022 during our Caribbean Heritage celebration. My condolences to @leo.coltrane , Jocelyn, and her family and friends.
This week, we honor public servants at all levels of government who dedicate themselves to working for their fellow citizens and improving services that NYers rely on. Happy Public Service Recognition Week.
Ashie Earnest is an example of how simple gestures can have a big impact. As a state program examiner in the State Comptroller’s Bureau of State Expenditures, she evaluates state spending for legal compliance, efficiency and effectiveness, and identifies opportunities to prevent waste, fraud and abuse.
This critical work requires collaboration, and Ashie was inspired to build on her connections with her teammates. She introduced “diversity lunches,” where teammates experience different cultural dishes together, allowing others to try something new and learn more about each other.
Ashie’s supervisors say her leadership and creativity boosted team morale, fostered diversity and inclusion, and made the office a more fun place to work. She also received a Much Valued Professional (MVP) Award last year from the State Comptroller’s office for her efforts.
We asked Ashie about team building at the State Comptroller’s office.
🔵 What kind of difference has the diversity lunch made in the office?
Team collaboration is at an all-time high! Most of the diversity lunches consisted of ordering out as a team. These lunches were scheduled in advance, typically with a few days’ notice. I set up a poll with my team to decide which cuisine we should opt for that month. I had predetermined the restaurant for each food option. Whichever cuisine won the poll, we would order from that restaurant. All team members were invited to participate, regardless of whether they ordered food. There were two dates, that were potluck style where the team could bring in or make a dish of their own choosing. It created a fun and collaborative environment, which helped the overall morale and allowed the team to positively communicate and adapt to any work challenges that presented itself.

Bring Your Child to Work Day is a great opportunity to show the next generation what public service looks like. Our employees’ children got a peek last week at their parents on-the-job and the important work we do every day for New Yorkers.
Speeding up the return of lost money is my priority, so I worked with the State Legislature to create the Expedited Payment Program. Now you may receive up to $5,000. Cash your check!
