On May 18, New York Law School is honored to welcome New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin (@speakermenin ) as Keynote Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient at our 134th Commencement. Speaker Menin is only the second lawyer to serve as Council Speaker and has an extraordinary and deep record of public service. She has an inspiring story and unmatched set of experiences to share with our students as we celebrate our 135th anniversary of launching lawyers who helped build modern New York and are on the frontlines of advocating for justice, including at least 33 alumni who have served on the City Council and its predecessor, the Board of Alderman. For the third consecutive year, Professor Anna G. Cominsky ’05 and the Criminal Defense Clinic, accompanied by NYLS Professor Emeritus Frank Bress, welcomed 22 law students and Professor Carsten Momsen from Freie Universistat of Berlin (@fulawclinic ), for an immersive academic experience.
NYLS Criminal Defense Clinic students led a session introducing their international peers to the fundamentals of New York criminal law and procedure and engaging in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. The experience extended beyond the classroom, as NYLS students accompanied the visiting group to the courthouse, where they collectively observed arraignments and a trial.
Back on campus, NYLS students helped facilitate a structured debrief. The week culminated in Professor Cominsky’s Advocacy of Criminal Cases course: NYLS students demonstrated their courtroom skills, while the visiting students—having learned about jury selection earlier in the week—served as mock jurors. This collaborative exercise provided NYLS students with a dynamic, practice-oriented opportunity to refine their litigation techniques before an engaged, international audience.
We're getting ready to celebrate NYLS Spirit Day—and 135 years of NYLS—on Thursday, April 23! Students, faculty, and staff: be sure to wear your NYLS swag next week and enjoy trivia, games, and special deals on campus.
And there's still time for everyone to enjoy 35% off on all NYLS merchandise at brandshop.nyls.edu with the code SPIRIT35. Valid through Friday, April 17, 2026. Discount not valid on diploma frames.
