New York City Opera History (1946) On May 15, 1946, Camilla Williams made history when she signed a regular contract with the New York City Opera, becoming the first African-American woman to hold such a position with a major U.S. opera company. She made her debut as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, marking a defining moment not only for NYCO, but for American opera. Unlocking Opera — Contralto What does “contralto” mean? The lowest female voice type. Deep, rich, and resonant, the contralto has a dark, velvety color. True contraltos are rare, making this voice especially distinctive. Contraltos often portray powerful figures: queens, sorceresses, wise women and sometimes young male “trouser roles.” Types of Contraltos: Lyric – Warm and expressive.
