SpaceX is entering uncharted territory on shareholder rights. When the company goes public, its reported corporate governance structure would give CEO Elon Musk unprecedented control while sharply limiting accountability to shareholders. NYC Comptroller Levine joined @CNBC to outline his concerns.
NYC’s outdoor dining program is buried in red tape. Nearly 1,000 restaurants are still stuck waiting for permits while businesses lose out during peak season. Comptroller Levine has opened an investigation into the city's permitting process so that we can ensure this valuable and important program meets the needs of restaurants and small businesses. In this month’s New York by the Numbers, inflation across the New York metro area remained stubbornly high after a sharp increase in March. Driven by surging energy and gas prices, we are now seeing a spike in the cost of groceries, shelter, and air fares.
On a positive note, City tax revenues have exceeded the forecasts made in last June’s Adopted Budget and tourism has rebounded after a harsh winter.

As @SpaceX gears up for what is believed will be the biggest IPO in history, valued at $1.75 trillion, leaders of three of the nation’s largest pension systems, including NYC Comptroller Levine, sent a letter to SpaceX’s executive team, raising alarms over reports that SpaceX’s proposed IPO governance structure would give Elon Musk near-total control with limited shareholder accountability.
Concerns include super-voting shares, mandatory arbitration, barriers to shareholder lawsuits, and even a reported provision that, based on Musk's expected ownership stake, would require his own consent for removal as CEO.
Investors are urging SpaceX to adopt stronger governance protections before going public. Link in bio to read more.
Thanks NY1's Inside City Hall and Errol Louis for the conversation. The FY2027 Executive Budget shows significant improvement from the February plan -- it avoids imposing a property tax on New Yorkers and raiding the City's rainy day reserves. Still, it continues to rely heavily on one-time measures and short-term savings. Addressing deeper structural imbalances and adding to those reserves is critical to ensuring the City is fully prepared against potential fiscal shocks.
We commend @nycmayor Mamdani for presenting an Executive Budget proposal that meaningfully improves on the February plan, replacing an inequitable property tax increase with a targeted pied-à-terre tax and avoiding raiding the City’s rainy-day reserves. Still, this Executive Budget relies on one-time measures and does not address deeper structural imbalances in the City’s budget.
It was a pleasure to welcome a dedicated group of Bangladeshi community leaders last week for a highly productive conversation about the unique needs of this vibrant community and actionable ways our office can better support them across the five boroughs.
Their ongoing leadership and partnership remain vital to ensuring city resources are accessible, equitable, and working for all New Yorkers.
Happy Mother’s Day to the moms, caregivers, and families who keep our city running every day. Your care, strength, and resilience make New York stronger. 💐
Big news: the 125th and Broadway station is finally getting accessible. This major crossroads has been a dead-end for those who need wheelchair access, the disabled, caregivers and the elderly who cannot climb the stairs or escalators to get to the subway platform.
Now, after years of community advocacy, @columbia and the @mta have reached an agreement to add three elevators and widen the escalators, finally making this station accessible to everyone.
A packed room to have powerful conversations about investing in NYC students. Glad to see so many NYC leaders, families, educators, and community partners at the ✏️ Citywide Council on High Schools Legislative Breakfast at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
Comptroller Levine emphasized making every education dollar count, addressing challenges with enrollment and special education services, and ensuring all NYC public school graduates are prepared to succeed in today’s workforce.
🍳 Special shout out to the students from the @FoodandFinanceHigh School for preparing and serving a world-class breakfast!
Before serving as NYC Comptroller, Mark Levine was a public school bilingual math and science teacher in the South Bronx. He knows firsthand the dedication it takes to show up for students every day, and the challenges educators face. 🍎 Happy National Teacher Appreciation Week to the educators shaping and empowering New York City’s future leaders every day.
