🎺 A spectacular night at The RNCM! ✨
We’re thrilled to share a selection of photos from last night’s incredible performance of New Horizons at the Royal Northern College of Music, given by The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain under the baton of Prof Nicholas Childs.
A huge thank you and congratulations to all of our brilliant NYBBGB musicians for delivering such an inspiring concert 🙌 and to our wonderful audience—the auditorium was absolutely packed, and your support means everything to the Band.
A special mention to our guest baritone soloist Mike Cavanagh, who truly wowed the audience with a stunning performance 👏
We were also honoured to be joined by three of the composers featured in the programme—Peter Graham, Edward Gregson and Andrea Price. Andrea’s brand-new commission Victoria Wood: A Laugh Less Ordinary was a deeply special moment, paying tribute to Victoria Wood on the 10th anniversary of her passing.

Today, The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain shares the deeply sad news that John Gillam passed away yesterday — former Chair, trustee, tutor, alumnus and lifelong supporter of The NYBBGB.
John’s relationship with The NYBBGB began in 1975 as a BBb Bass player on the Easter course under Eric Ball and developed into a lifelong association spanning five decades. Across that time, he served as a performer, educator, trustee and Chair, and helped shape the organisation’s direction with clarity, care and commitment.
As a player, John performed at the highest level with bands including Brighouse & Rastrick Band, Black Dyke Band and others, and his influence within The NYBBGB as a leader and mentor was profound.
NYBBGB CEO Mark Bromley said: “John Gillam gave outstanding service to The NYBBGB... John leaves a lasting legacy and he will be greatly missed.”
Long-time friend, colleague and NYBBGB trustee Ewan Easton reflected: “John made you feel safe… His legacy is not just what he achieved, but the direction of travel he helped create.”
Our thoughts are with John’s wife Iglika, son George and daughter Florence at this very difficult time.

The NYBBGB will share details of John’s funeral in due course.
