Andorraya gedəndə Sorteny Milli Parkının içində yerləşən kiçik bir sığınacaqda (refuge) qalırıq. Əvvəllər çoban daxması olan bu yer sonradan dağ turistləri üçün təmir edilib. Biz ora yalnız xizəklə qalxırıq, amma piyada (əsasən snowshoe ilə) də çatmaq olar. Gecə və ya gündüz, qar və ya günəş, yarış və ya istirahət günü olmasından asılı olmayaraq, o iki kilometrlik, 10% maili yol həmişə bizi gözləyir.
Yolun özü də, ətrafdakı mənzərələr də valehedicidir… amma yorucu bir gündən sonra yarım saatlıq yoxuşu qalxmadan birbaşa otağa girə bilmək də ən az o mənzərələr qədər xoşdur 😀
Where Haji Chelebi Khan may have once proudly overlooked his city on an autumn hunt, perhaps reminiscing about his resilient people’s victory over Nadir Shah, nearly three centuries later, on this same mountaintop pasture on a sunny October day, our aid station group offers pickles and peanuts to runners in neon spandex and ridiculous sunglasses, whose idea of fun is huffing and toiling up this grueling climb.

Sheki is one of those regions whose trails and charms have kept me coming back time and again; not enough to make me a local, but just enough to keep it floating in my imaginations (and intonations, for a few days after each visit). Eventually, these visits and daydreams started rendering visions of Sheki as one of Azerbaijan’s future trail-running capitals.
The ever-overachieving @Race.Az team brought this fantasy one step closer to reality last weekend, fueled by a dedicated and growing community of mountain runners. Of course, nothing is possible without the help of local legends like @mushfiq_semedli and @mustaffarid who magically have answers to all questions, enthusiasm of local volunteers, support of Marxal Resort, cooperation of public institutions, etc… you know the deal, it takes a village.

On Saturday I stood atop the peak and lied (lovingly) to runners that the hardest part was over, just before they plunged into a painfully technical descent toward the Khan’s Palace 1400m below. The view was so nice that even a fake photographer couldn’t mess it up too badly.
