๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ซ๐จโ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ฅ takes you on a journey through Cragsideโs vast engineered landscape, designed to harness the power of water.
Discover the Timber Flume, the very beginning of Cragsideโs hydroelectric story, which directs water into Nellyโs Moss Lakes - two manโmade lakes at the very top of the grounds. From here, follow waymarkers down the hillside to the Powerhouse, where turbines and generators once transformed water into electricity.
Continue along a picturesque path beneath towering trees and alongside the Debdon Burn to the Pumphouse, before tracing the banks of Tumbleton Lake and climbing the hillside once more.

A major ยฃ๐.๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐๐๐ญ is underway to ensure Cragside House stands strong for years to come. The project will take place over the next 2 years while the House remains open to visitors.
Although much of the roof was replaced in the 1970s it is beginning to show signs of wear and tear. Its dramatic position against the crag, coupled with an elaborate multi-roof design as a result of years of architectural extensions, makes it especially vulnerable to heavy rainfall and storms. Modern weather patterns, including longer wetter winters, heavy persistent rain, and more frequent storms overwhelm the water drainage system built for Victorian conditions.
This essential project will halt the deterioration of the roof which in turn with stop water ingress and leaks, protect the interiors and collections, and slow the spread of harmful salts in the brickwork.
We are working with specialist contractors to repair the intricate roofscape. The roof is a giant jigsaw made up of over 100 roof slopes and multiple interconnecting roof ridges. They will be using a substantial scaffolding structure to ensure safe and efficient access.
๐๐ก๐ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐:
- Re-tiling gaps in the roof
- Lifting a re-bedding all ridge tiles
- Complete replacement of large rooflights
- Re-roofing flat roofs
- Leading parapet gutters
- Remove foliage
- Re-pointing brickwork and chimneys
- Complete replacement of large rooflights
These repairs will strengthen Cragsideโs resilience to climate change and help ensure that this muchโloved House continues to inspire visitors for years to come. Read more about the project - link in bio.
This project has been funded by the National Trust and by generous grants from Wolfson Foundation and Sylvia Waddilove Charitable Trust.

Clambering through Cragside's Rock Garden is a mini hike with big character.
This impressive garden wraps around the House. You can follow the footpaths lined with spring heathers and towering rhododendrons. The grand stone steps were created from sandstone blasted from quarries on the grounds - adding engineered drama to every step.

The Carriage Drive will be closed on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 January for planned tree safety work.
Weather permitting, we hope to re-open the Carriage Drive again from Thursday 22 January.
During the winter months, we recommend checking the website for updates before travel at nationaltrust.org.uk/cragside
The recent snow has transformed Cragside into a winter wonderland but it's pretty deep so we need to remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday 6 January. It may take some time for the snow to thaw as freezing temperatures continue this week. Please check in on our website before travel if you're planning a visit.
