Voices on the Line is a collection of vintage analog telephones sit together, on a table in a room, or on a blanket in a park. Wires connect them to each other, but there’s no phone company, no line running to the wall. Pick up a receiver and there’s a dial tone anyway. A little black book sits beside each phone with numbers listed. Extensions leading to recorded speeches, songs about phone calls, stories about the way phone systems used to work, voices from decades past. Some extensions are unlisted. Some you find by accident. Dial 411 and see where it takes you. Or figure out how to call the other phones (there’s a clue in the little black book) and find yourself connected to a stranger who is also interacting with the piece. #sanpedro #soundart #arstopensanpedro

Listen to stories about the old phone system, historic speeches, music about making or receiving phone calls, or your horoscope on vintage analog telephones, each connected to a special and private phone network. Voices on the Line is an analog telephone experience by Long Beach-based sound artist @nsputnik . 📞 For one day only, his collection of vintage telephones will be installed in @wilshireonline ’s conference room, connecting curious callers to oral histories, archival dial-a-poem and dial-a-song systems, and other rare telephonic arcana.
Voices on the Line will coincide with the Dead Media Chat Room, a symposium on archaic technologies and new rituals to revive them, co-presented with @tape_losangeles and @wilshireonline , on the occasion of the first annual Wilshire Online Expo!
Photography has been one side of my artistic expression. I also work in sound art, audio, video, electronics, and computers as a medium.
"Voices on the Line" is my first piece that uses vintage analog telephones connected to a self-contained network. Pick up a receiver, dial a number, and someone from another time answers. A story, a song, maybe a voice you weren't expecting.
I've been working with sound artists and interactive installations for over a decade. This is my first sound art piece, and now that work will live here too.
