Introducing: water quality equipment! Summer sampling season for #waterquality is coming up fast for the #naturalresources department. So the team is gathering, cleaning, calibrating, and prepping field equipment to be ready for June! These three intrsuments/pieces of equipment give us a lot of ways to collect data about #nantucket ponds. 🟠 The secchi disk provides in the moment water clarity, light penetration, and depth measurements. 🔩 The YSI probe gives us in the moment data for salinity/ conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature. We deploy the YSI at different depths of our sampling sites to know the changes throughout the water column. 💧The Niskin helps us collect water samples from just above the bottom. These samples then get analyzed at @coastalsystemsprogram lab for even more factors like dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus. #fieldequipment

Happy Mother’s Day to these special moms at NRD! Field work scheduling becomes extra special when you add little ones into the mix! The amount of logistical planning and tasks completed before even landing at work for the day or out on the boat can be challenging. Cheers to the ladies who are pulling double duty whether they are chasing storm data, making early morning water quality sampling windows, or navigating multiple budgets each day to help Nantucket’s natural resources.-thank you for all you do! #ack #womeninstem #mothersday #nantucket #naturalresources

Nantucket Natural Resources Department and local organizations monitor the #harmfulalgalblooms of the island throughout the #summer season (June to October). We sample weekly ensuring you can have up to date information on what bodies of water are safe to interact with or to avoid. Please know that harmful algal blooms can impact humans and pets a variety of ways. If you see a yellow caution or red alert sign please stay away from the body of water and make sure your pets do not enter it as well. !Note that symptom onset is rapid and seek immediate medical attention. If you have questions, check out the resource below: www.hab.whoi.edu Stay safe and enjoy the summer! #waterquality #nantucket nantucketnaturalresources

Thank you to @massmarinefisheries for giving our #naturalresources team a refresher in phytoplankton identification! #Phytoplankton exist in both freshwater and saltwater. Understanding them is critical to #nantucket water quality monitoring as it focuses on harmful algal blooms. #ack #environmentalscience

Help us welcome the newest addition to the team as the Water Resource Specialist: Tessa Peixoto! They have dove in (pun intended) head first into hatchery and Natural Resources Department routine. She is ready to learn anything and everything! 💪 The team is excited to have her onboard just in time for water sampling and harmful algal bloom sampling season! You will soon see her out in the ponds and harbor starting June! Three fun facts about Tessa: 🦈 She has worked on a white shark cage diving boat 🇧🇷🇺🇸She is Brasilian American and speaks Portuguese and English 🍪 She loves baking and will have goodies to share #waterquality #nantucketisland #ack #womeninstem
