Some work of mine going up on Saturday 16 May at Ultraviolet, as part of NO COMPUTER, a group show where every photograph is shot on film and printed in the darkroom. No screen, no scanner, no file in the chain.
It’s a premise I find important, and one that’s pushed me. Most of my film work, like a lot of film work today, stops at the negative: scanned, finished on screen, delivered as a JPG. This show asks the older question: what does the image become when a hand stays in it from the negative all the way to the wall? Slower. More physical. Harder, in the right way.

I recently spent the afternoon with my friend and sculptor Andrew Whitehouse in his studio, working through the space and sitting him among his own work.
The light was absolutely incredible. Hard, slatted shadows raking through the workshop in the early part of the afternoon, then bigger washes of clean window light by the gallery space later on.
Andrew was great fun to photograph. Easy company, patient with the slow medium format pace, and properly engaged with what we were doing. I am really happy with the results.
If you’re in Cape Town, his solo show Geomass is still up at Brutal Gallery, 48 Albert Road, Woodstock, but only for two more days.
