Fantastical photographer Claire Rosen (@clairerosenphoto ) took this behind-the-scenes shot of her interview with Lulu. We had no idea she was the first ever MOUSE photographer or we would have definitely put it in the introduction! Looking at Claire Rosen's photographs (@clairerosenphoto ) can feel like walking through someone else's dreams. This is one she took in 2011 called "Up & Away." Producer Ian Stewart made this handy pie chart to illustrate our morning news meeting. (For the uninitiated, these "clear knee mom jeans" are apparently dividing America).
To cross into Mexico from the United States at Los Ebanos in south-eastern Texas, you have to take a ride back in time. The only way to get across is a hand-cranked ferry. We met our colleague, NPR’s John Burnett there. He covers immigration, and has been coming to this spot for decades: “This is the last muscle-powered ferry on the 1,200 mile river border…. But it’s kind of disappearing. The border has become this… place packed with men with guns, with walls, with spy blimps, and with drug crimes, and so this is kind of the disappearing border where we are now.” #border #losebanos #ferry
O. D. Emery stands on his farm in southeastern Texas. On the one side of his property is the Rio Grande River and Mexico. On the other, a 20 foot concrete and steel beam wall, guarded by border patrol. Emery’s father bought this land in the 1940s and he grows cotton and sugarcane on it. Under President George W. Bush, a barrier was put up here to stop the flow of drugs and immigrants coming in illegally. Emery has liked the results and thinks more walls should be put up in this area. “Who wouldn’t want the wall? Crooks? Illegals? They are the only ones who don’t want the wall. I don’t think we are going to build a wall across the bridges, you can still enter legally. You can still see your family or go shopping. We are just trying to stop the illegal activity.” #npr #immigration #bordersecurity #farming #thewall #border #borderpatrol
At the Sacred Heart Church in McAllen, families who have come into the country illegally but have been cleared to travel by Border Patrol come for a rest stop. They are given clothing, food, water, and showers, before continuing on their journey. This woman is from El Salvador - she and her teenage son fled gang violence there. She's on her way to California and has an immigration hearing scheduled there on March 10th. #immigration #bordersecurity #npr #border #deportation
Marlene Castro, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent, takes notes after detaining two 17-year old unauthorized migrants on the banks of the Rio Grande River in Roma, Texas. Castro grew up on the border – her grandparents emigrated from Mexico. She got into law enforcement after a friend asked her what she wanted to be and she replied “wonder woman.” And he told her to ‘try law enforcement.’ She says at the beginning of her career in border patrol many people called her a traitor to her people and she almost quit. Now, she says she is proud to serve her country. She says the border is a complicated place with no easy answers. She has a 17 year old daughter who is the same age as the two migrants she just detained. “I try to help people as much as I can. I do have a job to do…that’s how I see things now. I’m keeping the community I work and live in safe.” #border #npr #fieldtrip #bordersecurity #immigration
Yesterday we did a ride-along with Customs and Border Patrol. They took us to the Roma Bluffs in Roma, TX -- a good illustration of just how close Mexican and American towns are along some parts of the border. We're standing on the US side looking at the Rio Grande. On the other side, Ciudad Miguel Aleman, Mexico. #texas #npr #riogrande #border #borderlands
