Cards This track grew from an idea that Liv came up with. You can hear the chords and hook in original rough demo she sent over (swipe to hear). Over time we added to the production but stayed true to the original chords Liv wrote. Adding new synth sounds, recording drums and percussion. New keys melodies were added and Liv completed the lyrics/final vocal parts. The track took quite a few twists and turns over its development. There are three different bassist playing on this track. @lukewynter played on the choruses originally. @betholenahan wrote and played the 2nd verse arpeggiated part. @chrisdaggermusic added the finishing touches - particularly in the last chorus/outro (swipe to see the 🔥🗡) Lyrically, Cards is about intimacy between friends and how that can affect a relationship for better or for worse. With break ups we often lose a lover and a friend. “I held my cards close in fear of losing something else that I adore”

STILL This song began life as a beat Tom had stored in a folder of demo ideas from many years ago (see vid 3). Liv heard it and wrote melody and lyrics over the demo during lockdown. Originally titled ‘Womp’ but changed to ‘Still’. Stillness that we encountered from the lockdowns has enabled us to evaluate our lives and dissatisfactions. It’s a song about bringing the change you desire, taking control of your life and happiness. Originally drums were a basic programmed loop. There was no bridge section. Bass was just one synth riff that still exists as the chorus riff. The synth melody became a nice vocal motif too. Now the track had more shape, lyrics and melody. We developed and re-tracked the bass, drums and Rhodes together. This brought the track to life. The nuances and subtle variations that come with playing through a track together rather than repeating loops lifted it to a new level (see vid 2). The ‘womp’ synth bass still remains present in the chorus but was replayed by Chris on our trusty se-1x. Finally some synth/keys overdubs sprinkled on top and it was ready to mix.

NORTH This track began life as a solo synth improvisation by Tom on his Prophet-08 synth. Having recorded the midi notes Tom did another final pass of the improv, this time tweaking the LP filter and adjusting pedal settings to give more shape and animation. (As captured in slide 2) Livs improvised wails added a new edge of emotion that felt powerful and lifted it to a whole new level. The original improvisation was a minute or so longer so it needed a section cutting off. There are moments that we felt needed more filtering and distortion to eb and flow with the movement of vocals. We achieved this with reprocessing parts through the Overstayer 8755DM. With some subtle synth overdubs and vocal processing the track was feeling fairly complete. Matt felt that the track was feeling sonically too direct/close and needed to feel more like us playing in a room (more open). He did a full drum take of quite muted drum tones. You can hear a train passing his studio at one point - which actually just adds to the tension. The overall effect created a feeling of a natural space for the synths and vocals to be in. This final, subtle, addition really helped bring the track to life.

SASAMORI This song has been in the vaults for some time. It’s been in our live set for about a year already. For a long time this song was named ‘Jazz Forest’ for no particular reason. It just fitted the vibe. We decided to name this song after our Japanese friend ‘Ryo Sasamori’. He booked us for a gig in Tokyo a few years ago, an experience that meant a lot and has stayed with us all. Sasamori means ‘bamboo forest’ so it felt an apt replacement for the slightly random ‘jazz forest’ and is nice homage to our time there. Our good friend and ex-bassist Jim Wiltshire is playing bass on this. His setup is a bass guitar that tracks midi notes to his SE-1x synth. Some lines end up tracking with slight glitches in notes. We ended up enjoying these imperfections. So they mostly stayed. Typical to Matt’s style, the groove isn’t ‘normal’. The track can be felt as 4/4 but drum grove is in 5/8 with a pandero part that comes in verses. Chorus’ use a cross rhythm on the ride that kinda adds to the unsettled feeling and wonkyness. Production wise we felt the need to lean into some more heavy tape saturation and bring some elements of psychedelia to the sonics. Lyrically the track is about disagreeing with others’ opinions but still appreciating common ground and managing to find friendship where there is difference.
