SNOW FENCE was Nowhere Collab’s submission in the Common Chicago Exhibit at @mascontext , as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. This last exploration is more abstract & conflates several Midwest regional vernacular structures (pole barn, corn crib & wood slat fence) into a form for capturing & displaying memories. The site of Ton Farm is at the Southern edge of the Chicago, along the Little Calumet River. The site is challenging to see or access from the North, so the fence is designed primarily as a visible river access point. Renderings by @oliver_batzli

SNOW FENCE was Nowhere Collab’s submission in the Common Chicago Exhibit at MAS Context, as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Snow Fences are historically deployed to divert snow from roads or pathways. In More Beaches for All we transformed the fence into linear infrastructure that could capture blowing snow into a cold plunge drift for a beach-side sauna.

SNOW FENCE, was Nowhere Collab’s submission in the Common Chicago Exhibit at MAS Context, as part of the Chicago Architectural Biennial. Snow fences are historically deployed to divert snow from roads or pathways. In Rewilding the Dan Ryan Expressway we explored using the snow fence to envelope the expressway, creating a new topography for winter activities. Special thanks to @oliver_batzli for the renderings.

NW Collab has been working with Springpoint Architects & @brinshore on Garfield Place, the renovation of a senior affordable housing project in Terre Haute, Indiana for several years. Built in 1974, the building now qualifies for historic tax credits, which were a critical addition to LIHTC in financing the rehab. With financing in place, we should be in construction later this year!

Spring has sprung, which means mowing season (if you believe in that)! We’re having some fun imagining a mashup of a DIY Sol LeWitt approach to mowing patterns within the Cartesian grid & Midwest landscape.

So, one day you are visiting a building in a small town in Indiana - responding to an RFP for a condition assessment - and you find the building filled with works by Marshall Studios! After graduating from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Jane & Gordon Martz joined the family’s pottery business in Veedersburg, Indiana where they produced midcentury modern pieces. The studio employed many residents of the town & it was a joy to hear the stories & memories of how the studio engaged & collaborated with residents & students. The tiles were designed for the bathroom doors. Images from their catalogs show the tapestry & light shade.

This year’s Point-in-Time Count for Benton County, IN is happening today. The PIT Count is an annual HUD survey conducted by local communities to count sheltered & unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single day in January. @mtkveteransresourcecenter is leading the count again this year & it’s been humbling and insightful to volunteer in this effort for another year. Housing instability in rural areas looks different than in urban areas and there are a few issues with the methodology and definition of homelessness in rural areas that result in undercounts: typical housing instability often results in couch-surfing or doubling up which does not meet HUD’s definition of homelessness, and the lack of shelters results in no counts. As we conduct the survey each year, we are making more connections to community organizations that help to lead us to better perform the count. 📷 @timothykent

IIT fall graduate architecture design studio is complete! Congratulations to the students who designed a mixed-use high-rise building consisting of dorms, apartments, hotel rooms, and a civic engagement center. Their study, mid-term, and final models exhibit their process and progress throughout the semester. Well done!✨✨
