7 days left to submit to our open call! Besides the more analytical and conceptual aspects of 'Guilty Pleasures', we’re also looking for projects that lean into defiant self-indulgence — works driven by fascination, joy, and personal obsession. Love to people-watch? Maybe start a photo series of interesting people you see on the streets. Obsessed with croissants? Why not do an elaborate photoshoot with our favourite crescent-shaped bread roll? Have something to get off your chest about monsteras? We’re all ears. 'Guilty Pleasures' is also a celebration of what makes you invested and excited without judgement or justification. We’re interested in projects that follow curiosity wherever it leads — whether playful, obsessive, tender, excessive, or simply fun — and in how you creatively interpret your own quirks, fixations and interests. — The open call will run from 30th Jan to 1st Mar 2026. You can send in your ideas to 👉 bit.ly/n-a-guilty-pleasures. Link in bio. — Something to confess? Drop a quick guilty confession here: bit.ly/n-a-gp-confessions. Link in bio.

Art and design movements have often emerged from a rejection of social norms — pushing back against what is popularised, censored, or deemed “good.” From Rococo's ornamental indulgence and Camp's theatricality, to Punk's defiance, Postmodernism's irony, and Neo-Baroque maximalism, these movements embraced pleasure over restraint, emotion over discipline, and excess over “good taste.” Sometimes criticised as frivolous, unserious, or even embarrassing, these movements reveal how ideas of quality and value are socially constructed, and how at times enjoyment itself can become something to feel guilty about. In the spirit of 'Guilty Pleasures', we invite you to question the styles, aesthetics, and politics that shape what is considered a “good” piece of work, and to consider what happens when you rebel against them. Explore indulgence and shame, irony and sincerity, ornament and trash, softness, spectacle, and desire. — The open call will run from 30th Jan to 1st Mar 2026. The theme of ‘Guilty Pleasures’ came about while we were discussing the ways in which we define “good” work - what embedded systems have been put in place to judge and decide if a work is good or not. What happens when we find ourselves enjoying these “bad” works that the majority have chosen to hold in contempt? Do we feel a need to hide our instincts? Or do we defiantly love it more because it’s objectively bad? For our sixth issue of Now & Again, we’re hoping to dissect and explore these concepts of criticism that have been socially and culturally constructed, and to look at the distinctions between enjoying and critiquing. These interpretations can come in the form of exploring textures, the simple joy of material pleasures, writing about a film you love that for some reason everyone hates, a secret hobby you relish but feel an innate bashfulness about, and so on. We’d like to peel apart the layers of the objective “good” and ask ourselves: why should something we find pleasure in be deemed guilty? — The open call will run from 30th Jan to 1st Mar 2026. We’re back with more interviews! We had the chance to speak with Fabian Gamper @fabiangamper , the cinematographer of ‘Sound of Falling’ @sound_of_falling (2025), a beautifully sinister film directed by Mascha Schilinski. Awarded the Jury Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, ‘Sound of Falling’ stitches together the stories of four girls who, across different time periods, resided in the same remote German farmhouse. Their lives eerily mirror one another despite being separated by time, tracing how generational trauma lingers as the same space evolves over a century. Fabian was recently awarded the Silver Frog at EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2025 (International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography) for his work on the film. He spoke with our editor Yi An @yianchen313 about the creative process behind the film’s look, how specific scenes were shot, and the immersive effects he wanted to achieve. We had the pleasure of interviewing Seamus McGarvey @seamiemc , the cinematographer of ‘Die My Love’ @diemylovefilm (2025), a film directed by Lynne Ramsay, starring the formidable and charming pair of actors Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. Adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel, ‘Die My Love’ tells the story of a young mother, Grace, grappling with postpartum depression and psychosis in rural Montana. As her grip on reality unravels, her marriage to her husband Jackson and their pastoral life start to take a sinister turn. Seamus talked to our editor Yi An @yianchen313 about the creative decisions he made for the film, his experience shooting with Ramsay, Lawrence and Pattinson, as well as his extensive body of cinematographic work. We have a zine collection now, and if the term hasn't quite taken up space in your bit of the world yet, here’s the gist: Zines are self-published, specialised print magazines offering deep-dive perspectives on niche subjects. They’re all about that beautiful, stubborn, independent spirit. They're usually small, curated print runs, meaning they exist because someone cared a lot about a specific thing and decided to put their own money and effort into making it gorgeous. That's the part that gets me. Right now, we've got some heavy hitters in the collection: Science of the Secondary, Now & Again, Mynah Magazine, and In Plain Words. We're in the constant, slightly frantic process of adding more titles. This is just the beginning of a genuine, fiercely independent friendship. Come and find the one that validates your specific, wonderful neurosis.
