Her mother Brittainy describes the birth in one word: “Surrender”.
“For the second baby, I was determined to give myself the homebirth I wanted for my first child, but too fearful to have. So this time, with all the tools first time motherhood taught me and education from @nova.birth.services - from both the safe spaces in visits with midwife Jennifer and student midwife Detrisscia, and the NOVA homebirth classes taught by Katie - along with my doula who was also at my first birth, I walked in truth that my body was fully capable. The only lesson left to learn was oxytocin, and what boundaries my body needed for a safe space. For a few days, I felt waves of intensity but followed by pauses in the phases of labor. Though I had done everything “right” in setting up the birth environment and inviting the right team, the one thing I had to remember, was to listen to my own body.”
“I remember Katie telling a story in class of one of her own births and how things slowed when a certain person showed up. I didn’t realize that I was also impacted by who I allowed to communicate with me and get into my head, even days prior to birth.”
There was a key turning point for Brittainy, when her waters had been ruptured for a while and the safety window for delivering at home was fast approaching.
“I learned I wasn’t progressing. Both the doula and the midwife came to me and said “it’s like a light switch for you and we see it. Your contractions start or slow the minute you feel safe and no amount of mood lighting is changing how aware you become. Turn off the phone, turn down all the lights, kick everyone out, and rest. You need to surrender to the process”. “
