We (donโt) Want Wind @dutchdesignweek - 19-27 October 2024 @ Ketelhuisplein
Just like tulips, clogs and cheese, windmills are an icon of the Netherlands. But modern wind turbines actually provoke a lot of resistance. Where does this contradiction come from? And how can we learn from the past and give modern wind turbines โ an essential part of the necessary energy transition โ a more positive image?
With the installation We (donโt) Want Wind Noud Sleumer wants us to think about how to come up with better solutions together.
We (donโt) Want Wind is made possible with the support of Rabobank, Dutch Design Foundation, Design to Market and Trudo. The creative engineering is done in collaboration with Nikolai Gillissen.

Currently working in Sri Lanka on kickstarting our project about littered aluminum cans. Aluminium cans are currently collected, but litter remains an issue. Communities living in coastal regions
play a crucial role in this system, cleaning up beaches and coastal regions while keeping materials in circulation. The coming year we will be working together with these collectors to create new value from discarded cans.
Our goal is to connect the (in)formal recycling economy with the formal market of tourism. By producing locally and designing for the tourist market, we recognize and strengthen the skills and entrepreneurship that already exist within local communities.
We aim to build a more circular and fairer model, a system that keeps both materials and value within local hands, and that fosters more sustainable relationships between those who consume and those who produce.
The past week weโve been taking a deep dive and learning so much. Meeting communities that collect and resell aluminum cans, among other waste. Visiting our partner Lion, to learn all about can production, consumption and recycling in Sri Lanka. Working together with Melting Point to cast a chair out of recycled aluminum beer cans. And so much more.
Next week we launch the project at SLDF. Stay tuned for updates and hope to see you all there!

Reframing Visual Communication Design as a Catalyst for Societal and Behavioral Change
Join us for a vibrant collaboration between the School of Design New Media, BINUS University, and AIDIA (Indonesia Association of Visual Communication Design Professionals)!
In todayโs fast-changing world, where climate urgency and technological shifts are reshaping our lives, design in Indonesia is stepping up to do more than just look good โ itโs becoming a powerful force for social innovation and positive change.
Weโre thrilled to welcome two inspiring international speakers, Noud Sleumer (Social & Conceptual Designer Lecturer at Fontys Academy of Arts) and Ganjar Satrio (Founder gdtlab.id and Master Students at Politecnico Milano), who work at the exciting intersection of design, research, and social impact. Theyโll share fresh ideas and experiences with lecturers, students, and professionals in visual communication design.
The lively discussion will be led by Adi Nugroho, President-elect of AIDIA, and a passionate Faculty Member at BINUS University. Letโs dive into the world of design as research and discover how visual communication can spark real societal transformation!

After getting to learn about the waste management sector in Jakarta, our work now really starts! ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐
The coming months we will be conceptualizing our research, and work on interventions within the waste management system in Jakarta. We went to Jakarta to learn about the (informal) waste sector and along the way we got a lot insights. We saw how the city deals with plastic, how waste pickers keep the system running, and how the togetherness and resilience of communities are key factors when turning trash into value. These images show some insights we shared during the symphosium at @erasmushuis_jakarta Looking forward to see where this will bring us the coming months ๐๐

Beste Kept Secret recap!
What a stellar experience to be part of Best Kept Secret festival! It really was a three day infinity of music, food and culture. Whereas this year we presented an altered version of the porcelain wind turbines, the coming years things will only get better. This presentation is the start of a 3-year collaboration, creating new installations for the next editions of the festival. Already brainstorming about new interactive pieces โ๏ธ๐
Many thanks to @kop_inbeeld and @bksfestival for the collaboration.

BKS here we come!
โAt The Lodge, a location on site where the wind has free rein, Noud Sleumer presents his installation โWe (donโt) want windโ. He investigates why modern wind turbines evoke resistance, while classic mills are cherished. Through sound, form and context, Noud takes you into the tension between nostalgia, technology and energy. You literally lean in the wind and wonder: what is it actually like to BE a windmill?โ
